Peppery cheese biscuits

I've just made these - a batch of peppery cheese biscuits, which are superb, though I say it myself.,  I gave one to my OH to taste and he pulled SUCH a face you would think they were full of garlic and he was a vampire!  I asked what was wrong, and apparently they were "too dry" . . .  That's the whole point of biscuits I told him.  Actually, I thought they were pretty good as they had nice layers ("lamination" is it?  I've been watching Bakeoff!) and are SO tasty. Ah well, his loss.  I am taking them along as a gift for our friends whose turn it is to host the tea party this morning (we take it in turns, but I always bake, as it gives me an excuse!!)

Here is the recipe, from caroline Liddell's The New Baking (1988, so not so new now).

I hope you can reaad it.  It calls for 3 oz (75g) each of the first three ingredients - margarine, Parmesan cheese (I used extra strong Cheddar, as I had no Parmesan in the fridge), and brown plain flour (I used OO grade white, as it needed using up).  1/2 teaspoon salt, and 3/4 - 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper. Poppy seeds to sprinkle on top.

DO NOT MAKE IF HUNGRY.  You have been warned!

  2. I made some cheese crackers once they were so good. Buttery, flaky and round.
I loved them. Need to find that recipe.
Buying some apples today. ... I can't wait to try the cake.

  3. They sound heavenly. The best cheese biscuits I ever made were not much more than grated cheese and pepper melted in blobs :)

  4. Those biscuits look scrumptious - will copy down the recipe and try them. I usually use a Delia Smith Cheese Straw recipe and make biscuits with that but its good to try different recipes :) I enjoyed Bake-Off too. Made a Mary Recipe yesterday for Coffee and Walnut Traybake and it was SO yummy :)

  6. Quite Em. He doesn't know how lucky he is! And they weren't dry at all. Robin - I tried Paul Hollywood's recipe for Oatcakes, and all I can say is that if he had made the contestants on Bakeoff make those, it would have sorted out the men from the boys . . . Anyway, I bought new scales on the strength of my failure, as I really cannot believe the amount of melted butter was correct . . .

Danielle - I hope you find time to make them - you sound to be so busy with your wonderful new cards, and the ponies as well. The best recipes are usually the simplest.

  7. Sound delish to me, BB, I'm a savory biscuit kind of gal here too, as opposed to sweet. This recipe may find its way into the box for trying out one day when the carb cupboard is empty. Thanks for sharing.
