Wish list

We had a day out at Builth Antiques Fair today.  A poor photo of a print I'd have loved to bring home with me.

These two cider mugs were made by the short-lived Exeter Pottery.  The one on the left says:

Y Y U R
Y Y U B
I C Y R
Y Y for me

Translated, this Elizabethan motto reads: Too wise you are, too wise you be, I see you are, too wise for me.  !!

They were £95 each - I wish it had been Christmas!!!

Another post tomorrow.  Too tired now.

  1. YY U R etc is what people used to write in autograph books back in the early 60s when everyone had a book and got all friends to write in it

Maybe an early Christmas present? or maybe they will still be for sale in December! I like the print too but they've done the mount wrong to show the wording which would niggle me so I would need to re-mount properly

  2. I love that print and would have been tempted by it too.

  4. Sue - you've jogged my memory and I am sure that someone wrote that in my old (lost) autograph book. The next Antiques Fair isn't until next May now, and the dealer was from Kent, so I doubt our paths will cross again, but I will certainly look out for Exeter pottery from now on. I like Barnstaple pottery stuff too . . .

CTales - I saw another dealer walking off with it as we were on our way back to the car, so it will be up for sale with her for more money. It didn't have my name on it . . .

Joan - I love anything connected with the countryside and my farming roots (well, Agricultural Labourers really, in my family tree). I have truly had a blessed day today so your blessing helped!

  5. The print is absolutely my kind of thing - is it 1930s?

  6. Rowan - yes, late 20's or 30s. Absolutely me and I wish I had at least asked how much it was now. Ah well . . .
