28 deg. C (82 deg. F) - too hot for me

Anything above 70 deg. F and I begin to wilt.  Over 80 (it was 82 today) and my breathing gets compromised, especially when pollen levels are so high.  Time to stay indoors, as I have done most of this afternoon.  I had the bed stripped and remade by 7.20 this morning (I was up at 5.30), and the first load of Tam's washing on (I came home with 4 or 5 bagloads!)

I did some work on the Probate, nearly there now, and got in touch with the Solicitors in Brecon to arrange to pick up a copy of Keith's Will.

I needed bread so started making myself an Oat Loaf - I needed to make oat flour in the blender first.  I soon had the dough working away in the bread maker but had to put it in a bowl in the fridge to slowly rise after the Solicitors had returned my call.

As you can see, it rose well despite being in the cool.

Then I drove over the Eppynts to Brecon, to collect the Will and pick up a few bits of shopping.  Just walking round Brecon gave me a headache and had me melting.  I took a clean plastic bag of used asthma inhalers into Boots to be recycled, and the chap who dealt with me took the bag from me  with the tips of two fingers like it was full of cat poo!!! I didn't look like a bag lady - I was cleanly dressed, made up and hair done - did he think it was contaminated or something?  What odd behaviour.

Heat-misty Brecon Beacons in the distance.  NOT the day to be climbing up Pen-y-Fan.

Of course, back home I have had to water round, especially the young plants in pots - which I should have planted last week when it was wet for them - and everything in tubs and as far as the hose would shoot the water in the beds.  The cats have chosen to be indoors and who can blame them, in this heat, when they have thick fur.

Of course, the prognostications for "the hottest summer on record" with maps with black and dark red blobs on showing the hottest areas to scare people are doing the rounds online.  When I was growing up, it was just a good summer, and we had temps in the 90s back then and 1976 is still being talked about . . .  Why does the media have to scare us about everything these days?  Ignorance is bliss.

Ilona - a shame you weren't here this week as I imagine the Pembrokeshire beaches would really have been very welcome indeed.

  1. Out shopping early here so home before 10am. Watching tennis in the cool living room watering still to do later.
Hope your breathing is better tomorrow.

  2. That's the best idea. Do you have to go far for a supermarket? I've just bunged in some Monarda (Bergamot) and Borage in empty planters out the front and given them a good watering. THey were not happy in their baby pots.

I will stay inside in the day tomorrow and do some sewing.

  3. Did the shopping early, but had pegged washing out before we went and it was already dry when we got back. Watered and dead-headed front garden pots which are in the shade from 4pm. Miss Sheva has been disappearing for hours then turns up demanding food, so I presume she has found a cool place to be. Take care. Xx

    1. I got four lots of washing done and dried! Last lot on now (Friday morning obviously). Gardening here is following the shade (or in spring the sun!) round the garden, but not in June. That's never a good month for me with the pollen levels. Miss Sheva has obviously found a cool bush to disappear beneath.

    1. I couldn't park where I could get a good view. I am quite fond of that header photo too. The front rose is The Lark Ascending and is, I think, my favourite for its beautiful colour. The two yellow ones in the border beyond it came with the house, and were in pots and NOT happy there. Since planting in the border they have gone from strength to strength and flower all summer long.

  5. That is too hot for no air conditioning. It was cool here this morning, so I finally swept out the garage, taking down cobwebs as well. It gets very dirty over the winter, being on a dirt and gravel alley. I need to water flowerpots, but a black bird got angry when I tried, chased me off! Must have babies nearby.

    1. The house downstairs stays cool, especially the kitchen. Good in summer - not so in winter. You have had a productive day. Good to hear you have a nesting Blackbird. Lots round here, and Thrushes too. We are surrounded by trees, so plenty of birds in general.

  6. Today, where I live, it will be 116 F. The air conditioner is broken. It’s all relative isn’t it. I truly hope you make it though!

    1. Oh my goodness Chris. Are you in Oz? And no A/C? I hope you can keep cool somehow. I would be in a heap. I hope you make it through and I shall think of you whenever I complain it's too hot! Cooler and overcast this morning, which is fine by me.

  7. Especially during the summer I try and get out shopping early to beat the heat. We reached 37C today in the city and man am I glad that I did my shopping early yesterday. We are now under a severe thunderstorm and tornado watch.

    God bless.

    1. Gosh, someone else with insane heat. In my defence, it's the humidity with the heat that I struggle with because of my compromised breathing. Keep safe with those storm/tornado warnings.

  8. It sounds lovely, high summer. 82 isn't all that hot here, w the sea breeze, has to be in the 90s to be ''hot''---but like you my pug has breathing issues if it gets above 80*. So he may be tucked up in the bedroom w the AC some summer days. btw, I used your pill giving hint last night! Baby Mo has a newish pain/ anxiety med to help him be calm and rest---he has decided it tastes awful, after three months. I did the ''knob of butter'' and it worked great, thanks.

We had a lovely little thunderstorm this afternoon and now it is chilly again. I never am dressed right these days.

PS I am so interested in your quilted border, can you show it again please and when finished explain how it is attached...? If possible and not too big and heavy for you.

    love

    1. Haha - no sea breezes here, as we're landlocked, with the mountains between us and the sea. (1 1/2 hours away). Glad the pill tip worked for Mo. Sorry he's poorly again.

I will put the quilt components on the bed later and photograph it. I trust I can put them together neatly. It's been quilted as it's been assembled. (The back will look a pickle with the joining though!) It's not heavy at all.
