The National Grid has emailed households with the phone numbers to contact so I have these to hand, and good torches/lights in power does go out. My head torch arrived today too.
I am just charging my phone as I've got it low from listening to brilliant pod casts today - The Rest is History of course. Two on Elizabeth 1 and sadly, the last excellent one of 4 about King Arthur. Did he really exist? I would like to think so, but possibly not centred on Tintagel as in . . . legend . . . and the time frame may be a little different, perhaps earlier. Perhaps there were several chaps called Arthur, whose feats have ended up amalgamated. As in the 16th and 17th centuries, when he was considered made up (Le Morte D'Arthur and Thomas Malory had a lot to answer for, as much of that definitely embroidered and fictional). What think you?
Today's walk was a bit short and sweet (40 mins) as my back was complaining when I was going uphill, so I think I have tweaked it sleeping awkwardly. I was nice and warm last night as when I changed the bed, I put the thicker patchwork quilt on. I have a really warm (hot!) duck down duvet for snow/frost but don't need that yet. I need to pension off the (old) duvet which is a sort of autumn weight - is part of two that fasten together, summer and autumn, to make a winter weight duvet. I will buy one next week I think.
I have had a sale of some carved wooden pieces - Keith bought them 10 years or so ago, intending to make a coffer-type box with them, but never did. (They almost certainly came from an old coffer). I sold them through Marketplace, so I was expecting someone to pick them up. Imagine my surprise when it was a sale to Dover in Kent - t'other end of the country. So they are being carefully wrapped to go via Courier.

I have a funny little tip--I know you knit. Knitting doesn't need much light if any. I always have a simple knitting project at hand for power failures. [scarf, leg warmers, simple! hat w rolled edge.]
ReplyDeleteRe: phone battery being low, took me years! ro realize i should plug it in to charge constantly. Like as you listen to the pods, always plug it in, etc. Same w tablets and Kindles. And for storm rep be sure it is set for fast battery recharge, not the economical slow charge. You can always reset post-storm.
I know you'll be fine. Let us know you're ok!
Ah, but I am stuck on current knitting, which is a fancy-pants woolley hat which needs more brain and skill than I have! I could always use up some old wool and make a throw with squares for charity.
DeleteI always fast recharge my phone, and the computer is always at 100% as it is plugged in.
I'll keep you posted, worry not. I think we are right on the edge of this storm.
The storm knitting should be ''other''. Gather your yarn odds and ends and a short circular needle, do a roll brim hat for Rosie. [Adults' size cast on 80 st on # 7 or 8 [ish] needle. Make a tube. I can look up a child size for you? //My iPhone automatically switches to slow charge to prolong battery life. I hate it doing it, so that is why I mentioned it.
DeleteI do have some patterns for little hats as I made them for my kids. I must look them out.
DeleteI had the email from the National Grid too. I've never had one before but have made a note of contact information. Also checked items and made ready just in case as it is so very dark now when I wake up early morning. Fingers crossed. Stay safe and warm.
ReplyDeleteI took a leaf from Tam's book and put the number down in my phone contacts under Power Cut.
DeleteI've had a nice hour or so sewing (after finishing a letter to a friend), and I found a new series to watch set in Australia. Not my usual fare, but actually very good. The High Country it's called.
Stay safe too.
Hope you get through the storm with very little trouble.
ReplyDeleteI often hope that Arthur was real, or at least based on real people.
God bless.
I am awake and downstairs and it's 4 a.m. and completely quiet out there. Don't know if the storm has dropped lower than it was predicted to, or whether it's late coming through. The West Country (Devon/Cornwall) had an amber warning. I will watch the news at breakfast time and see how folk fared.
ReplyDeleteI definitely hope that Arthur was real . . .
