At least we have huge French windows behind the tree now, making access simple, and don't have to take it through a doorway and down the hall and through another doorway (even though they were wide Georgian openings). Or if it was really shedding, it would be poked out through the open sash window!

A rented tree sounds very ethical but not sure if we would try that in future.Bovey Bellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13117332471600275100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8569181568013465215.post-42738429793438731452021-12-23T02:29:49.811-08:002021-12-23T02:29:49.811-08:00Have fun looking for other of her books hart - wel...Have fun looking for other of her books hart - well worth it.Bovey Bellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13117332471600275100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8569181568013465215.post-39334885731737174362021-12-23T02:29:26.304-08:002021-12-23T02:29:26.304-08:00Alison Uttley's writing is delightful isn'...Alison Uttley's writing is delightful isn't it? I heard it so often, I almost came to know it by heart! She does write beautifully. If you don't post before, have a Happy Christmas. We didn't have an actual tree either, just a branch we'd find on the woods. Cutting trees for Christmas was unheard of where I grew up, and people would have been horrified! No Christmas tree farms. I just saw on our national news an item about potted trees available to rent in the UK, I think it was in Gloucester. Interesting idea. (Still wouldn't mind, in many ways).

I'd forgotten the nuts - the only time we saw them in the shops. Oh and the tray of toffee with a little hammer (those are now "antiques"!!!) and of course, apart from Easter Eggs, Christmas was the only time that chocolate came into the house. Oh, and those sugared orange and lemon slices, we always had a box of those. Mum's favourites. I loved the Country Child as a teenager, I found a copy of Stories for Christmas (an anthology of stories from other published books of hers) when my children were little and we have read stories from that book at this time of year for years.

You are so right that we have lost the special things that were treats at Christmas. Clementines, chocolates, turkish delight and nuts are a few that I remember. sustainablemumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04099701194160334671noreply@blogger.com
