Malvern Flea - I survived!

. . . despite the early start, driving half the way in the pitch dark and being stuck behind a horse box doing 40 max . . . oh and the long detour because the A449 was shut at British Camp (and will be for months) due to shoring up the steep hillside below it.  I went half way to Tewkesbury on a dog-leg to get back to the showground.  The Autumn Garden Festival is soon,  with all the marquees being put up, but there were a lot fewer people selling. The outside pitches had been crammed together.  I strolled round a couple of times and it was lovely when the sun came out.  I did all the sheds this time, and the Avon Hall - although the latter is start to look a bit car-bootish in places.  It wouldn't take one woman long to put away as she only had about 20 items for sale on her table.

I did a different detour to come home and this gives a different view.

It cheered me up no end to see my friends again.  I'll be back later (tomorrow?) with photos from the Fair.  Here's one to tempt you.

  1. Gosh if those molds could talk. Is that a tall legged egg stand? Not seen one quite so high off the surface before if it is?
Glad you had a nice day out , there are constant accidents round here at the moment causing so many closures and diversions! In the village there is spot in the middle of the road with water spurting up and out…. Soon that will be a day closed with no way out bar battling through the really minute lanes along with the ten thousand delivery vans that seem to populate the roads now.
Hope you can have a peaceful evening x Danette

  2. Some of the nicest moulds I've seen. I bet they have cheered up a few meals. At the back, it's a Welsh spoon rack. At the front, flatter eggy holder thing. Some nice kitchenalia there.

We often get springs pouring out of the hedgerow banks during or after heavy rain. Sometimes through damaged bits of road too when the water level is high. You're right on the delivery vans. That is so NOT GREEN.

    1. Mine too. I should think these came from auction - especially the ceramic display stands at the back. I see she has a jam thermometer just like the one I use.

  4. A beautifully set up table. Detours are a fact of life but it doesn't make them any less frustrating. The only way we can get out of our little slice of heaven on earth is by ferry or a small plane. The ferry is broken so no-one is going anywhere today.

    1. This - like Wales - doesn't offer much opportunity for detours and the one I took added 10 miles or so to the journey. I was half way to Tewkesbury at one point! Sorry your ferry is broken. Does that affect your holiday plans?

  5. How beautiful your countryside is, so green and peaceful.

Sorry about the detour and slow drivers, but the flea always sounds so fun. Worth the effort.

Love the kitchenalia table, esp the eggy thing. The molds aren't my style but these are so fabulous, w the knobs and spires. Were they used for gelatin molds of a savory kind as well as desserts? Layered in colors of sherbet and ice cream could make a great presentation. I wonder if they were mostly decorative.

    1. Yes, the browning-off caused by the long hot dry summer has been perked up a lot by recent rain. Well, being stuck behind the horse box means I got to appreciate the beauty of the scenery more.

I think some moulds were definitely either or, and they had savoury concoctions in them. I'd have to check with Mrs Beeton! Just Googled it and yes, savouries using calf's foot jelly were also put into moulds like these.

    1. Serious money for the slabs, as they are fairly rare these days. The white Tapioca etc containers also a nice lot. Edwardian, and selling online at around £85 each!!

  7. Sounds like a bad day for driving. If you go along the A44 there is no need to go to past British camp. Mind you the road has to be repaired along the A470 south of Erwood because of a landslip by the Wye, not sure if that means a road closure, if so that will be fun for the big trucks

  8. I know my route like the back of my hand as have been driving it 15 years or so, plus the A44 is not my favourite road and takes me too far over to the North - Bromyard way, with no real "short cut" x-country. Easier just to do the dog leg.

If they shut the road completely at Erwood, all hell will break loose with the heavies though I guess they would have to use the road over the Epynts if coming from Brecon way.
