What £7.50 bought me at the greengrocery warehouse

Well, I am sick of driving now.  Not to mention packing and unpacking.  Bar yesterday, I have done nothing else, daily, for nearly a week.  I am giving myself tomorrow off!  Anyway, Unit looking a bit more exciting and full of different things.  Hopefully some folk will find them of interest.  Of course, what sells is militaria.  I need to try and use what little knowledge I have, to try and find some more bits.

I stopped at Chris Thomas's greengrocery warehouse again - where we used to always get our fruit and veg from.  Tuesday is a better day to go, as that's when fresh stock comes in so there are always some really good £1 boxes of stuff then.  Next time I go that way . . .

The lemons were enormous - 3 for £1.30.  The peppers 2 for £1.  4 good plums for £1.  Raspberries £1.  Strawberries £1.50.  Apples £1 the bag.  I think the very fresh (still had ice on it!) Broccoli (well, Calabrese) was about 70p.

I may just have treated myself too, having earned enough to top up fuel for the week (£40) at the Fair, with £5 left over.  Tee magazine, a new one, was £5.99.  It will stay in my collection for several years I suspect.

Plus it came with free seeds.

The Tesco shop had a large bag of the cat biscuits I buy, as they were on special offer so £4.25 cheaper than usual. It's cheaper to buy the big bag. The cat sachets (40) were also reduced and on offer, from £12 to £10.75.  I would have needed both next week anyway.  I got my lunch there too - a meal deal - and a few other things.  £48.74.  I remembered the black eye pencil - the dark brown one I bought on line goes on far too ginger! I went to Lidl for eye makeup remover pads (dry ones) as they were £1.80 in Tesco.  In Lidl I got a double pack for the same money.  It pays to shop around.

Now I must quickly water round as it was cool and overcast here first thing, and pots still looked damp.  Now they are definitely NOT!

  1. How great to get seeds with your magazines. We don't have that here where I live in Canada. Lots of great deals on the veggies as well.

    God bless.

    1. Free packets of seeds often offered with magazines, esp. gardening ones of course.

  2. The magazine - is it a rebranding of Kitchen Garden? I used to have that a long time ago when it was called Country Kitchen AND Garden before it became just Kitchen Garden? Or am I talking nonsense and there are now two separate magazines when once there was just one?
Anyway - I hope it has some good recipe ideas. The warehouse looks like a good place for fruit and veg.

    1. Well, it was wrapped so I couldn't tell until I opened it but no, mostly (95%) recipes, with little tips about growing peas or soft fruit etc. Recipes for using up gluts etc too. Not one I would buy regularly.

  3. I cannot get over your produce prices. Here, I was shocked to see the local Walmart selling corn for $1.25 for one ear. I haven't been so shocked in my life.

    1. Some of the fruit they have in is use-up-quickly, hence the price. Other bits like the lemons and plums and Broccoli, perfect condition. Helps to grow your own soft fruit!!! and veg come to that.

  4. You spent about £7.50 at a greengrocery warehouse, which is roughly Rp180,000 in Indonesian currency (depending on the exchange rate). In Indonesia, that amount of money goes a long way. I could buy plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, enough to last several days for my family.

    1. These prices are way below Supermarket ones. In Tesco, the strawberries would have been £2.75; Raspberries £2.50; Lemons (MUCH smaller) are 37p each so £1.11 for 3; plums - 6 for £2.65; apples - these were eat quite quickly as been in storage a while hence cheap, Tesco £1.80 for 6. Broccoli £2.16 a Kilo. I expect our prices do sound expensive but so much imported as only strawberries properly in season at the moment. Don't even ask the price of Beef or Fish!!

  5. The fruit and veg look good and great value. I’m shopping between Tesco and Lidl at the moment and you certainly get more for your money at Lidl. We get our meat locally, slightly more expensive than supermarkets but superior in every way, we just ration it a bit.

  6. I used to love getting magazines with free seeds attached to them. In fact I am still using some of the seeds. Some lovely fruit and veg there.

    1. I have to say, I pinched one of the plums I bought with Rosie in mind. It was perfect. Flavour and not over-ripe.

  7. The magazine looks so entiiiicing--and free seeds! My SIL get a UK qilting mag that always has a free quilting to or booklet or satndalone apttern--Britsh mags know how to get customers buying. Your veggie/ fruit choices look great too, yum.
Interesting ro see you stocking fruit for Rosie--as a child I was not allowed fruit or fruit juice, my mom, a nutritionist, said Too Much Sugar!--we were only given vegs. And I still love vegs to this day. Can manage an apple if served w good cheese tho.
