The Winter Solstice and some Christmas crafting

It is the Winter Solstice today, so in a month we will begin to really notice the days lengthening again.  I can't wait.  I hate the wet grey days we've been having constantly, and there is another storm coming in tomorrow!  I hope it won't be too bad for folk, but they are threatening 50mph winds again. (That's better than the 80mph ones they were talking about yesterday).

Here's the little Dala horse I've just finished sewing.  He is from the Festive Felt Decorations book I got last week.  Took ages though, as lots of fiddly bits of embroidery on him.    I think he turned out quite well, and is to go on Rosie's (well, Tam & Jon's) Christmas tree.

Tam and Rosie were here yesterday afternoon and overnight, leaving 3 p.m. today.  It was lovely to have them here, though they are still getting over the really nasty cold they've had for about 10 days now - still snuffly and coughing, and Tam is mostly deaf.

We have been watching a lovely set of Youtube videos from Northern Finland by Sanna Vaara.  They are very calming and peaceful and enjoyable.  Check them out.

I've now finished Series 6 of Outlander and the first episode from the 2nd half of series 2nd was available to view today, so I've seen that now.  I was hoping to watch the London International Horse Show on iPlayer, but whatever I do, I cannot get the recordings to run.  Tam couldn't either. So frustrating.

Tomorrow I need to make a good loaf of bread and bake a big cake for the farmers up the hill.  For now though, it's bed.  My brain is tired from all the concentration on the embroidery.

  1. I love your Dala horse. I used to collect the wooden ones , have many [stored] from 1" to maybe 16". Many colors. My brother still buys and sends me vintage horses he sees at flea markets. Yours is darling. Hint, try to somehow date the ornaments you give to Rosie, my kids still love seeing the year and remembering.
We had snow overnight and the NW wind is howling, tho not quite gale level, 40 mph I think. Windchill is 1*F. [-17C] NW wind is safer than a south wind but my bedroom and sewing room get so very cold..... Mo and I stayed in.

    1. They are not something I've often seen in Wales. With my love of horses, they would have been something I'd like to collect. I will stitch the year on the back in small figures.

Gosh, sounds a bit cold and rough where you are. Tip - try taping up bubble wrap across any windows on the cold side of the house, as it gives a cheap and removable form of double glazing for the coldest winter months. I am fortunate that we have shutters on our two BIG North-facing windows, and that makes a big difference to room temperature.

    2. Yes! I had forgotten about using bubble wrap, tho the wind/ drafts gets hold and moves it around, even indoors side. I have one storm window for by my desk here, procrastinating as it's heavy and lots of salt smears--stored w/out a good clean.

  2. Your little ornament turned out beautifully. I hope that you can stick a date somewhere in an unseen place. It sounds silly, but years from now, when Rosie is grown and looking at that ornament, she will be able to think of you sewing it for her first Christmas, and it will matter a great deal.

    1. Well, I made a couple of boo-boos, one when joining in a new length of thread for the outer blanket stitch binding, but I will know next time. I will date it, and am sure it will be treasured.

  3. The little horse ornament is adorable! It's something Rosie will treasure when she's grown. I hope you've had a restful night.

    1. A restful night - well, apart from ageing bladder summoning me at intervals!! Then the Kitten Breakfast alarm call at 6.30 a.m.!

I was quite pleased with the Dala horse - didn't have any Kapok for stuffing - or rather, didn't now which box of stash it might be in - so used a little rolag of spinning wool instead.
