I've got the car back from the garage, and I can cope with Porlock Hill again now - but only if I am driving. Couldn't blardy walk up there - I think it's a 1 in 4 hill. (That's a 25% grade in American terms). No worries anyway, as it's in the West Country and haven't been down that way for many a long year. I have had problems with the handbrake on the car - it just wouldn't hold on a steep hill. The car was overdue an oil change anyway, so got both things attended to at the same time. I was surprised when I put the handbrake on and it only came up less than a cm! Phew. I had to drive into a very steep driveway on a narrow lane on the way back from Tam's recently and thought I'd end up going through their gate!

Without a car and knowing I was going to have to walk to the garage to collect it later, I sat down after breakfast and started stitching the two single quilts together. I will need to put a nice binding on it too, later. I am using a tiny 1" quilting needle and tiny stitches on the tiny 1 1/2" hexies. I have sewn about 2 1/2 feet of it now.
I have been rewatching Outlander from the start to keep me amused. I sped up through the bit where Jamie is flogged though. Looking at her gorgeous wedding dress, I really don't know how it stayed up. It must have been glued in place!! It's nice to get lost in history, and forget about the current world worries. Though, to be said, it was so good to see Trump starting to get his comeuppance . . .
I have tried to keep the heating off most of the day. I had it on for an hour and a half first thing, then half an hour at lunchtime. Alfie was looking cold though so I made him up the small hotty botty which I put under the quilt on the sofa where he was. He snuggled up onto that. Pippi was snuggled beside me and if she'd had her way, would have been inside the quilts as usual. It's 15.3 deg in the kitchen, not warm - not quite 60 deg. Fahrenheit, so I will put the heating back on shortly.
I filled up with diesel on Monday, but prices haven't gone up yet. Perhaps the situation with America v. Iran will now calm down a bit and prices may even drop. We are ALL paying for that war. If only this Government would stop trying to destroy farmers and destroy farmland, for we are getting into dangerous territory.
Right, back to Outlander and the quilts.
Driving seems to get more stressful with each birthday. I have to drive my husband home from the hospital next month, unfamiliar town, in the dark, drive on to the ferry and eventually home after a very long day, I'm dreading it.The American farmers are complaining bitterly about the cost of diesel perhaps this contributed to the change in Congress. In Canada I sense the government has woken up to the fact we need to be more food self sufficient and have begun to make some sensible decisions about supporting agriculture. Good idea for us all to stay warm and cosy.
ReplyDeleteI wish Britain would copy Canada when it comes to supporting agriculture. They seem hell bend on getting rid of farmers altogether. Food? Nah, we can make that in the laboratory or hey, try again to make everyone vegan like they did a couple of years back.
DeleteSorry you have a challenging drive up ahead. You will manage I am sure. You probably won't exactly enjoy it, but you will cope. Is there anyone you can take with you to ride shotgun and help give you some support?
Ah Porlock hill bings back memories, I used to love driving up that in my Mini but then it was tuned up, going down was fun. Used to drive green flat out and hit the brakes a couple of times finally braking hard at the last bend. I would loved to have driven it in my last Mini that was really quick, just wished I had brought it down there, done great bends to drive round. Too old now and the Mini has gone
ReplyDeleteIt's always a good idea to have top notch brakes on your car, especially in hilly Wales, I bet you feel a lot safer now. Your tiny little stitches are very neat, it must be a painstaking but relaxing job to do, especially when surrounded with cuddly cats.
ReplyDeleteYour driving nerves probably better than mine, from the sound of it!! What fun back in the day though.
ReplyDeleteSorry, this one obviously for Billy.
DeleteOMG Outlander! This is my favourite book series. I really should get back into watching it.
ReplyDeleteI know it well, from the books and from watching it on tv - have the DVDs for the first few series too. My favourite love story.
