I'm back from the vet with Lulu now. She has been resting all day, her favourite spot on the single bed (quilted of course) which has Tam's blow-up mattress laid across the top as nowhere else for me to put it. I "lost" her many times (Pippi too) before I discovered this hiding place. Anyway, she did a tiny offering of poo of the right colour and no longer diarrhoea this morning, and has been eating. I had trouble getting her into the cat carrier and after she escaped once, had to upend it and feed her in, with her still trying to double back and escape.
Here she is "tinging" the water bowl with her claws. It makes a musical ring. The vet said she had had a very bad allergic reaction causing Diverticulitis, to something in the PURINA FELIX ORIGINAL MIXED SELECTION IN GRAVY sachets. Do NOT buy these for your cat as there is something in the ingredients which can make certain cats very ill indeed. She said she didn't need any treatment, but I did right to bring her in to get her checked out.
I hated sitting in the vet's with her. Last time Tam and I were there to have L. Whale pts. My nerves were twanging - love makes you so vulnerable. My nervous system/stress levels have never really gotten back to normal after the state I was in during Keith's final weeks.
I shall go back and work a bit more on the quilt after tea. It will now have to have a stripe down the back too! Oh what fun :)
(I had some curry sauce left over from last night's king prawn curry so tonight it will be chicken curry, with mixed grain rice incl. red and wild rice. Yummy.)
I have had one expense. The 2nd is a new microwave (I will wait for Black Friday to get the Panasonic one I fancy - pointless buying the cheaper ones as they only last 3 yrs). What will the 3rd expense be?

I'm glad Lulu is on the mend. I wonder if it's worth complaining to Purina and suggesting they cover the vet bill? Maybe if you threaten to go on social media warning people not to buy the sachets they might pay up.
ReplyDeleteTHey won't cough up, of that I am sure. I need to check out some better quality sachets that I can afford . . .
DeleteThank you for update. What a relief there is nothing permanent but it makes me wonder how many other felines and their humans have been through the same trauma with that cat food. Hopefully your 3rd thing won't be an expensive one.
ReplyDeleteIt was very scary. Diarrhoea is one thing. D with blood in it quite another. Poor little girl.
ReplyDeleteI think the 3rd thing is going to be me finally booking at the Chiro, for my shoulder this time. I have had it sore for weeks but left it until I did the emptying of the Unit, so as not to pay twice!
I'm glad Lulu is going to be OK. I wonder what it can be in the food - and how many other cats have been affected
ReplyDeleteOur cats aren't but the version we buy is made in Australia so maybe it's a slightly different recipe or ingredients. Glad to know she's OK!
DeleteOur cats aren't but the version we buy is made in Australia so possibly it's a slightly different recipe or ingredients. Good that she's OK!
DeletePleased to her Lulu is on the mend. We have just had to buy another microwave as our old one conked out yesterday. We bought the Panasonic combination one which also has an air fryer option. I couldn't wait for Black Friday sadly as we use it all the time.
ReplyDeleteMine gets used mainly to reheat small portions of leftovers. I could live without it if necessary. Your combination one sounds worthwhile.
DeleteHappy that Lulu is on the mend. I'm sure the makers of the cat food won't cough up for your vet bill, they'll put it down to Lulu having a sensitive tummy. Hopefully there won't be a 3rd expense, but life does have a habit of throwing a spanner in the works. Going to watch Monty's last GW and see who we get in his place. Good luck with the hexy quilt. Xx
ReplyDeleteCurrently SICK of the hexi quilt! Having the evening off from it. I have to say I've not watched Monty's Gardener's World for a long while, only once or twice since Keith died. It used to be a favourite of mine at our old house, when I did a lot more gardening.
Delete3rd expense will be the Chiro for my shoulder . . .
Very difficult to be at the vets when you have heartbreaking memories. I'm sure it drained you mentally and physically. What a blessing to be home with a kitten on the mend and a cozy spot for you all to relax.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have a mental flinch just driving past there. Drained - that was about it. You've summed it up Anon.
DeleteI am so glad that Lulu did not have anything more serious. I have a Panasonic microwave, and have had it for probably 10 years. The first one was also this brand and lasted me close to 20 years. Hoping this one lasts just as long. It does pay to purchase quality.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
It was serious enough and I won't be happy until she is eating properly again. At the moment they don;t like any of the foods I have here . . . Thank you for the thumbs up for a Panasonic.
DeleteI'm so glad Lulu is okay, but how frightening for you, and probably painful for her. Seeing blood is never good sign.
ReplyDeleteI think I would send a letter to Purina UK [?] describing what happened. If enough people complain they may reconsider the food's ingredients---tho I am a bit stumped as to what in an edible food would cause his. Wheat/ grains? Flavorings? Also take a few pics of the food of you haven't discarded it, of the packaging, lot number, sell by info? Also she could have eaten something outdoors that's not related to the food?
About emergency appointments: my vet here, a rotating group, not sure how it works, but they have never ever put me off w an emergency. They always said , come right away. [pugs, not cats]. There is however , an emergency surcharge,; I think $85.oo. Maybe = L50?
Yup, scary for me and her tummy still sore when examined yesterday. I am going to email Purina with my "thoughts" - I shall try not to swear. It's got to be something that makes the gravy part I think. She hasn't been outside this week so don't think it's anything from out there.
DeleteI think vet's was busy because it was a Friday. COuld have got in with an emergency surcharge, but don't know how much that would be. I hope I never need to find out.
I wonder if Lulu's upset is similar to a person having a sensitivity to certain food ingredients? Both human and pet food surely contain some questionable stuff hiding behind unfamiliar terms. I'm glad she is recovering--a cat can so quickly become dehydrated. Sorry you've had this scare.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that any spilt food dries into tiny little hard lumps - the "ingredients" without the 85% water . . . I was worried about her being dehydrated too.
DeleteSo glad to hear Lulu is feeling better...and it wasn't anything too serious. Since our George was ill, I've had a mild suspicion about certain commercial cat foods and their ingredients, especially, as you say, the 'sauce-y' ones. I'm sure it's the same as us humans...too many artificial, chemical whatnots in our food causing all manner of digestive upset. Anyway, a happy outcome is the most important thing. And yes, a big emotional stressor/trauma does sensitize us to subsequent ones...so give yourself lots of grace and TLC. ~melanie
ReplyDeleteI don't trust any of them, but with 3 cats, the expensive good ones are priced prohibitively.
DeleteI allowed myself two glasses of wine (contents of a tiny bottle) last night. Nerves were like violin strings with tautness.
Oh that is such good news Lulu is better. What on earth is added to pet food to make some animals ill. What a minefield? Panasonic is a very reliable make we have had our microwave 12 years. It always seems expenses come in threes, more's the pity. Take care Sue H
ReplyDeletePanasonic is sounding better and better. I know there is ash in cat food. Who would give ash to their cat normally?
DeleteI'm glad she's on the mend, the vet obviously knew something about the Purina gravy cat food. I wonder how many other cats it has affected. 🤔
ReplyDeleteIt does sound a bit that way. I looked up on line and it said that Purina, when accused by other cat owners, said it was the same recipe, nothing nasty in it, so I am not alone with Lulu's experience.
