I am covered in bites - after a visit from a hungry horse fly on Monday, yesterday I paid the price of going through the undergrowth to give my Cardinal Richeleau rose a good drink (I planted it over the graves of Ghengis and Theo). For some reason the blardy bitey things - the one on my front was definitely a horse fly by the feel of it - go at the edge of clothing and so said clothing is inclined to rub the bite. I had to go to Llandod for After Bite yesterday as mine had run out and stocked up on yet MORE cat food as the boys have decided they will only eat the expensive cat biscuits (now on special offer, fortunately), and the most expensive cat sachets. I was glad to have £6 off in Tesco vouchers . . .
However, I did manage to save a BIG chunk on my breakdown assistance, having had to leave Green Flag (which was £161) and going with the one Tam recommended which she had been with successfully for about 7 years now. That was only £48. I can, however, recommend Green Flag as they have always been very prompt and reliable - NEVER never bother with AA or RAC. We were with the latter and broke down on a hot day on the A40 just outside Whitland, and despite many phone calls, and age and medical issues (my twice daily inhalers were at home) they told us we would have to stay in the car overnight!!!
My other almost-free Audible choice was C J Parris' Execution, about the Babbington Plot. Perhaps a bit heavy to read, but when you are driving long distance, it's great listening and I recommend it. I first heard of it when I was reading a children's novel by Alison Uttley, A Traveller in Time (I have a collection of her wonderful books). In A Traveller in Time, the main character, Penelope, is staying at her aunt's house in Derbyshire, and opens a door on the past - into 1580 and the Babington plot to put Mary on the throne . . . You can enjoy this book as an adult, it is so beautifully written and the time-slip notion is one I have enjoyed in many other novels, especially those by Barbara Erskine. I can recommend the podcast my painter neighbour has been listening to (and me too, by default) Historian Tom Holland's "The Rest is History" which was, snap, also about Mary Queen of Scots! I really enjoyed it, but missed the last podcast as I had to go out, so will listen to it all again.
Anyway, I decided I would cheer myself up and watch the new Outlander series Blood of my Blood, and have signed up to MGM - just 99p for the first 2 (or 3?) months, then £5.99 a month after that. I will end my subscription when they have (eventually) shown the last episode. So I sat down with my Baltimore quilt and started neatly resewing the joins on the back, pins everywhere pricking me. Warning - it starts with a death, which gave me a real lurch of emotion. I have to say though, Jamie Roy as Brian Fraser is VERY easy on the eye. Cor!! An old saying has just sprung into my mind - he could put his boots under my bed any day!!!
It did cheer me up, although there are just two episodes to watch as yet. I watched the second last night, swathed in quilt again and with Pippi in the middle of it, away from the pins, which made sewing rather difficult.
I may go out for an early walk whilst it is still nice and cool. I will check on humidity as that does affect my asthma.
Horsefly bites are so painful and itchy - hope the bite cream works well.
ReplyDeletePaint is so expensive nowadays, I skimped a bit on doing the living room and it shows - but hopefully not to visitors!
Well, at least this paint has a 10 year guarantee, so that's something. I'm still a bit itchy as all the bites are near the edges of clothing. I'm sure no-one notices any short cuts on your living room. I have gone RIGHT OFF decorating now!
DeleteWell, after that ringing endorsement I just had to Google Jamie Roy. Oh er missus, you aren't wrong there!
ReplyDeleteGlad I put a smile on your face :)
DeleteCats! Once you give them the expensive stuff they will never eat anything else!
ReplyDeleteToo true. Yet I was having to throw the other food away so they have me pinned to the wall on the food front.
DeleteI have always been with the AA and have been a gold member for years now, and I've had nothing but brilliant service from them, but if they ever did let me down I wouldn't hesitate to switch loyalty. I hate horsefly bites as I am really allergic to them, but up to now as I have been staying away from the canal side, I haven't been bitten once this year. I really suffered when we lived in Wales.
ReplyDeleteOK, that's interesting. I have the car insured with them now and have a feeling that gave me free breakdown coverage, but I thought they were like the RAC and so daftly, seem to have had two lots of coverage going! Ah well, I got my money's worth out of the Green Flag this year anyway when they had to rescue me from the Co-op when the Starter Motor went.
DeleteYes, we have a lot of bitey things in Wales, but the blardy horse flies are truly the worst by a long way. A couple more developed this morning but I shan't say where! NOT a great place to be bited anyway.
It seems so often there are things to bring us down & to worry about, Bovey. I won't tell you to "not worry" because that won't help much at all. So let it suffice for me to say I will keep you in prayer. Love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteWell, I have been a bit worried because I have some pain in my temples which I put down to TMJ - dentist said last time I ground my teefs a lot in my sleep (and I know that can be a cause). I got worried in case it developed into both sides in which case it could be the Temporal Arteritis that Keith was (wrongly we think) diagnosed with when it was actually his Parkinsons . Thank you for thinking of me.
DeleteI recommend E45 Itch Relief cream, I changed the washing powder and have come out in a lovely rash all over my back and chest, OH is itchy. Popping antihistamine pills too. That will teach me, back to Fairy. Had to google Jamie Roy, he's a bit of alright isn't he. We've used Green Flag for years and wouldn't touch the RAC after they left me stranded with a small baby in the car miles from anywhere. Fortunately a friend came and rescued me. Xx
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen that anywhere but will look out for it. I always used to use Fairy, but now use Tesco's own non-bio powder and seem to be ok with that.
ReplyDeleteRAC are thieves - taking your money and not helping, even in dire situations.
Ouch, horsefly bites are so painful. The last one I had a few years back drew blood. Now I get to be attacked by mosquitoes every time I am in the garden and yard.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I have taken an extra strong anti-histamine this morning as the one on my back SO itchy in the night.
ReplyDeleteHorsefly’s not good but they are big so easy to kill, they tend to be around farm animals not so much gardens. Blandford guys on the otherhand are nasty and can really bight. My wife ended up going to hospital after one got her in the garden
ReplyDeleteEasy to kill, IF you spot them. These were sneaky barstewards and went behind me and my hips etc. They are in the long grass here too, so I may have been nobbled going out with the compost bin etc.
DeleteWe used to live in Dorset and know all about Blandford Fly. They truly are obnoxious and the bite I had (mid-torso) was v. unpleasant although. That was when we had a Pony Club rally at Wilton park.
