My birthday started with a lovely long across-the-world video call from Rosie in NZ. It was so good to see her and speak to her again and we are so fortunate to have this lovely way of communicating now.

The girls and I didn't have to go too far to celebrate my birthday today. We booked a meal at Tomatitos in Hay-on-Wye. I had never had Tapas before, and we chose a lovely selection of plates including Potatos Bravas, Gambas Pil Pil (prawns in garlic sauce), Fresh anchovies (totally different to tinned!!), meatballs, Crackers with Membrillo and a lovely goats' cheese, chicken wings, and a couple of others I can't recall. Scrummy. Mind you, two glasses of Rioja at lunchtime = very tired birthday girl by the time we got home!! We chatted with some lovely people on a nearby table, and when she heard I'd been to Petra, she recommended a book which she knew I would love, The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. Well, I had a rash moment when I got home and Mr Amazon is sending me a paperback copy tomorrow. I will need to "work nights" to catch up on all the books I have to read :)
Temptation. Fortunately I have LOTS of embroidery skeins.
Of course, a lunchtime drink is fatal and I had to have a Time Team nap when I got back and the girls had gone home. I have had such a lovely day and chatted to friends in Hay. It has always felt like a second home to me!
Tomorrow is going to feel very flat! I've just subscribed to History Hits though, which was my joint present from my kids. That will give me something to look forward to every day and it doesn't take up any room!!!

What a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteYes - Gabs and I had originally planned to go to the American Museum at Bath, but Tam and Rosie would have found that difficult. This was a much better choice.
DeleteFeliz Cumpleanos-Happy Birthday. The lunch sounds wonderful. Take me next time! Now I know what to order when I go to Spain. The books are exquisite. You are so lucky to be able to shop at Booth's. A tea time nap was an excellent end to the day. Don't feel too low tomorrow, you still have the crab pate to enjoy and the books to caress and the memory of a lovely lunch with your daughters.
ReplyDeleteThe lunch was great and I didn't feel hungry until about 9 p.m. - shows what a difference lots of protein makes. Booths craft corner has something different every time I go in there, and the rest of it is of course absolutely bulging with books, both new and 2nd hand. Teatime nap was Essential!
DeleteHappy Birthday! What a wonderful special day you had!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to read the "Why We Quilt" book, must look online. Maybe I d get some insight for when I m asked, Why do you bother?
Your girls are a delight, as always.

DeleteI found it on the Amazon used books page, but didn't yet buy. Must pinch pennies due to vet bills.
DeleteLooks like you had a brilliant day. I love a dinnertime (midday, I'm northern) drink, prefer it to nighttime these days.
ReplyDeleteNormally I would never have a lunchtime drink (only at Christmas perhaps).
DeleteYour birthday sound lovely. Tapas is always a treat, we had it when in Spain on tour, but haven't found a place that serves it here.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Yes, I would definitely enjoy that again. What a shame no-one has set up a Tapas bar in your area.
DeleteHi Jennie, Many Happy Returns for yesterday. Sorry I am late to the parade but so pleased that you had a lovely day. you deserve it. Many happy bumps. Take care Tricia x
ReplyDeleteThanks Tricia. It was a lovely (if indulgent) day out. I will get rid of my old paperback versions of Tess and Jane Eyre to make room for the special ones.
DeleteHappy birthday! What a lovely day. The quilts and books are lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you Celie. Yes, it was a special day. I always enjoy going to Hay.
DeleteI'm glad you had such a felicitous outing! Hopefully tomorrow won't feel totally flat by comparison. I had a white foxglove for a few seasons; its mostly the shades of rose-pink that faithfully reappear each springtime in the west wall garden.
ReplyDeleteToday may be worrysome, as L. Whale's pad, following the claw stripping, has not healed . . . Back to vet's and yet ANOTHER bill. I will plant my Foxglove away from the wild ones hereabout and hope is stays chaste!
DeleteIt sounds like you had a really nice birthday. Happy Birthday for yesterday. 🎂 Those books are beautiful. ❤️
ReplyDeleteOne of the best. Just to have most of my family there made it - as always - so special. Danny and I will have a jaunt out somewhere when he can fit me in. Those books certainly leapt off the display!
DeleteSounds like a great day!
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed. I will do Bath another time.
DeleteA lovely day. The books look so pretty. A belated Happy Birthday to you. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteYou could spend a fortune buying your favourite classics . . .
DeleteWhat a lovely birthday and in your favourite town. The classic books are beautiful with their flower hard backs. It will give you pleasure to see them sitting on the bookshelves.
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed. They are both books I have read several times (Tess about half a dozen) and will be read again, not just look pretty on the bookshelf.
DeleteBelated Happy Birthday. It sounds as though you had a great day out.
ReplyDeleteThank you and yes, it was lovely. We had the last of the warmish weather - today has returned to more wintery temepratures - 6 deg! Down from 22 deg a couple of days ago. My poor garden will be very confused.
DeleteSorry I’m late saying Happy Birthday, it looks like a really good day and I love those books.
ReplyDeleteAlison in Devon x
What a very scrummy lunch out, and 2 glasses of wine. I can't drink at lunchtime now, I'd fall asleep in my plate of food. Those books are absolutely gorgeous and real keepsakes. Hope your foxglove keeps her chastity belt on, but .....! Hope L.Whale gets sorted at the vets. Sheva is lying on our bed in a patch of sunlight - spoilt. Xx
