Girding my loins

Tidying up doesn't do itself.  Nor does housework,  Nor does preparing for a Fair.  I have the Builtn Antiques Fair in early May, so need to get organized.  The Library is forever a dumping ground.  I knew where things were, but books, craft items etc etc kept landing up on the table and it was driving me mad.  ALL the books have now been tidied away, in the places where they belong. I had a sort out in the stables, found a box full of china in the teal blue/turquoise I am short of, and sorted out a couple of other boxes to go, plus brought in a deep empty box to fill with stuff from the table.  A job well done.

The table, btw, is freeform Yew, and the holes in it are from the original tree growth.  Keith and I loved it and I still do.  Glad it's not covered in junk now.

Here is last night's stirfy, with Pak Choi, Spring Onions, Courgettes, Orange Pepper and Mushrooms, and some Soy Sauce and Sesame Oil.  It was delicious.

I finally got to make the Scandivian Apple Cake, which is nice, but ideally needs ice cream with it :)

Tonight I have defrosted some chicken pieces from the last roast we had (probably months ago as I can't afford a joint very often).  I will do a chicken risotto with that for tonight's meal.  I like my rice dishes.

I had a long chat with the vet about the best way forward for L. Whale and his toe and she is just going to take off the very last digit (and not the whole toe) and make sure that there is obviously no nail left to grow into his pad any more.  He's booked in for Monday, poor chap.

I've watered the plants outside which needed it (new Hellebore, the big one, had gone floppy in the flower department).  Also the new Blackcurrants.  Most seem to be putting out shoots but the first couple or 3 are slow to do that.  Watered round in the greenhouse too.

Now I shall sit down with my book for half an hour.

  1. Your rooms look filled with treasures and things of beauty and interest. So wonderful. The yew table is very special, is it modern or antique. The yew must have n=been ancient? The crevices, the glowing polish, so love it--with the tiny cradle on top. I love seeing books and projects and ''finds'' on display, my mother would say Clean but interesting...like me w my neataholic exhusband, she warred w my military tidy dad over how neat a house should be. Both my kids are/ were/ like their dad extremely neat and minimal. ['books are clutter!"] so now I am as neat as I can manage even living alone now.

Your stirfry and cake look delish. Do you just make up the stirfry as you go. My last stir fry was not good, tho I usually love them.

I hope you're feeling better! And warmer. I'm wearing, indoors, layers of tees then a haevy sweater and a thick down vest. I'm glad I didn't plant pansies this year.\

PS there's a history post today on IG about a yew tree in England that is many thousands of years old. Imagine that. Druids worshipped it, maybe even neolithic Man.

    1. It is a modern table. The Yew it was made from will be a thousand years old. . . My husband spent his life in the Army but could be very untidy in his workshop - yet he knew exactly where everything was! Plus what was in every - unlabelled - tin!! Much of the stuff in there is stock. The chairs, bar the ladderback at the front, were special Windsor chairs which Keith loved and collected. (There are more in the kitchen). I don't do minimalist :) So many happy memories in the things I have collected down the years. Ties to the past.

Not completely better yet, but getting there. I have caved in and turned the central heating on this morning as no-one should have to sit in 15 deg . . .

There are a good many Yew Trees that are venerable - Much Marcle's has seats inside, and the Yew trees at Defynnog church (near Sennybridge) may be 5,000 years old - as is the one at Fortingall in Scotland, though recent research puts them younger. Indeed, churches very often built on sites which were special in Prehistory.

    1. I will, but the nearer it gets to the packing day, the harder it gets to sort it all out.

  4. The teal blue/turquoise china sounds interesting, turquoise is my favourite colour. The fairs keep you busy and that is a good thing. Poor L. Whale and his claw. I remember having Moss my dog neutered and at the time the vet said I'll take off his dewclaws at the same time because sometimes they can get ripped. Vets bills have become horrendously expensive and insurance a bit dodgy.

    1. I am always drawn to it, and customers seem to be too, but getting hold of the right things is NOT easy. I think Moss was your dog of a lifetime wasn't he, bless him. Vet's bills are getting ridiculous. Thank God I don't have horses any more.

  5. Just passing...picked you up on Julie's Blog post.....
Some years back, Julie posted a recipe for Scroggin Slice....
The Scroggin slice is a popular New Zealand cafe-style treat,
often viewed as a luxurious, baked version of trail mix (scroggin).
It typically features a chewy base of oats, dried fruits, nuts, chocolate,
and honey, often topped with cream cheese icing...
While classic, it is not officially recognized as the national cake...!
    Here's one recipe link...

It is a cake to die for...Please give it a try....I rest my case...! :).

    1. Oh thank you so much for posting the link. I will give it a whirl next week. Here, Scroggins is another (North Country?) name for the wild Crab Apples. I wish I'd seen this for sale when I was in NZ. Or perhaps I did and chose a lunch type meal instead.

  6. Now you know what my living room looks like since I started selling on Vinted!
Cake looks good, but most bakes can always be improved with the addition of ice cream!
    Good luck for Monday!

    1. OH gosh yes. The boxes are there until emptied. I have some cardboard boxes with awkward sized things to sell - the one at the back with the pierced tin dish on it is the German wooden horse and cart, circa 1900, and a very difficult size/shape to contain.

ALL cakes are better with ice cream!

I just want L. Whale to be comfortable again and hope that I can get the painkillers down him after the op.

  7. I love being surrounded by the things I treasure. They are what makes a house a home. That table is a thing of beauty.

    1. How I agree with you there. I have some of Keith's special things about the house, and it is comforting to see them and be reminded of happier times together.

  8. Gosh that Apple Cake does look delicious!! We all seem to have that one room that we use for a "dumping ground" - mine unfortunately is my sewing room. That's tomorrows job - to sort it out & find the table surfaces under all the clutter. It has been enjoyable to catch up on your posts as I was behind in my blog reading. You had a wonderful trip away - how special. I hope the Antiques Fair goes well for you in May. Thank you for your visit to my blog & your lovely comment. Julie xx

    1. It is OK but no great flavour, apart from the cinnamon. We do indeed all have a dumping ground. Every now and then it shrieks to be sorted! We should be glad that at least you and I have a sewing room . . .Else we would be stuck for places to put all the sewing bits!

  9. Clearing off that beautiful freeform Yew table must feel like such a relief; it’s far too lovely to be hidden under a pile of clutter. The stir-fry and apple cake looks like the perfect reward for a productive day, and I'll be thinking of L. Whale on Monday; I just shared a new post that you are invited to read.

    1. Yes it is. Craft things do NOT belong there, not the books I had been perusing and NOT put away and 4 of them were huge heavy text books too.

Thank you for your kind thoughts about L. Whale. He has been pretending to be a piebald Loaf of Bread out in the sunshine today,.

  10. I'm not at all resourceful when it comes to organizing a tipple of things--Gina informs me one should start by putting 'like with like' and being stern about a 'discard' pile.
The apple cake looks very appealing--served warm, maybe with cream?

  11. I hope Little Whale does well after the surgery on his toe--poor cat, he's going to dread the very sight of the cat carrier!
