Fun at the Fair

I really did not want to get up yesterday for the Fair.  My alarm was set for 5.30 but in the event, Alfie woke me at 4 a.m. for food, then wanted to go out at 4.15.  I didn't sleep after that.  The first part of the journey was in the dark, but it gradually lightened.  I don't enjoy driving at night nowadays.

Despite there being a steady footfall, by late morning I had only sold two things, and vowed never to do this Fair again!  Gradually it improved though, and we had two lovely young men who were having their own Bargain Hunt challenge, to spend I think it was £150 each, and putting what they bought in auction.  I wish them well.  There was some cheerful banter as they perused our stalls.  Our little group are good friends and at the end of the day, the couple at the end (newbies here) helped ferry all my heavy boxes downstairs and then Tom and partner who do all the heavy lifting, carried them out to the car for me.  Socially I love this Fair, even though much of the time incomings only just cover the cost of doing it. Copper seemed to be on trend yesterday . . . I dressed the French fish kettle with 4 little Cyclamens (it looked lovely) and put it front of house, and it sold early on. No interest in my mirror, so I will ask Ed to help me hang it in the guest bedroom.

I didn't realize that when my card payment provider changed this year, I would have to register my bank details all over again, and when I checked on getting home, a small but handy sum had amassed in my account and will be transferred in the next couple of days. A relief to have money coming in instead of it all going the other way. It was nice to be told by a potter that I had chosen some interesting ceramics too.  Not even a second glance at the little teddy chair . . . which was disappointing.

Everyone tries so hard to put on a show with their stands at this little Fair.  Here is a glimpse at other stands:

I should imagine that the Black Swan taxidermy is very hard to pack around. The porker too!

Lots of French things here.  Some of the dealers were discussing going to Belgian markets for their stock . . .  I was thinking, their profit margins must be slim?!!  You'd have to treat it as a holiday.

Dolls for Lizzie On The Beach.   The two little ones below are Baby Jesus figures from nativity scenes (French).

I am glad I have a rest for two months now.  I will slowly unpack today.  Tomorrow I have my appointment with the Specialist at LLandod hospital.  The stye has started healing properly since the antibiotics, but the new eye drops the G|P gave me are useless at night.  I need the thicker ones like the Hycosan gel from the Opticians.  I'd rather not have to buy them though.

I will try and do a little bit of an Autumn tidy in the garden.  It looks better for the lawn having been cut last week, and the gardener is coming back to do the two triangles for me and the hedge as well.  Then upstairs to crack on with the curtains.  I cut and sewed several dozen pairs of squares on Friday and will assemble them into bigger blocks today.

  1. Hi! I'm glad you enjoyed the Fair, being with friends. I can't tell if at the end you made a profit or not, it seems like very hard physical work. Did the couple competing to spend the best 150.oo buy from you.

I love poring over the booths. The dolls are a bit macabre this week, no charming china heads or wooden peg dolls. Possibly lovely simple blue and tan quilt about third booth photo down. Autumn hues plaid textiles in one booth, interesting if authentic woolen blankets. Thanks for posting. Sleep well.

PS Your eye appt is on a Sunday? You said ''tomorrow"? and how are T/J/R?

    love

    1. For once I did. However, when you tot up what stuff costs to buy, overheads like stand costs and travel to Fair, plus travel to Malvern, the "profit" shrinks a good deal. Yes, the competing couple both bought from me, which helped the exchequer.

I have to say, some (many!) of the other stalls have stuff I wouldn't think to buy. I mean - used old paintbrushes - really? Defo. wouldn't have had the porker or the black swan as such a limited market. I agree with you about the dolls this time.

Tomorrow was because I was writing this 4 a.m. this morning when I couldn't sleep.

Jon mending, Rosie's rash worse and her leg v. sore too - may be an infected area of eczema as it won't heal up and has to have a dressing on to dry it. Doc didn't even look at it the other day. Tam now VERY run down from trying to cope with broken sleep. Rosie has to have a nappy on in the day or she would scratch herself raw, and at night has to be changed/creamed if she wees as that stings so and wakes her. I have offered to go over so Tam can rest, but she said no.

    2. The used paintbrushes are very IN! lol. And some taxidermy too. So nasty. Your ceramics are lovely. Not meaning to be rude, but I do think your table covering in the maroon is not the best choice? It doesn't accent the beautiful glazes of the ceramics. And I love that you put cyclamen, see! That worked right away. [copper and brass are very ''hot'' here now, btw]
W the refinished little chair: here it is frowned upon to spruce up "primitives" and the drab chippy finish is prized. Will that style/ fad affect the selling of the chair?

Poor Tam and family, esp Rosie. She has had a lot of problems and is what, only 2 1/2?

Rest up, good luck tomorrow. [you may recall we both had eye appointments; I am referred to a specialist for surgery maybe after Xmas. So scary, but vision is crucial.]

  2. I love to see your pictures of the fairs you go to thank you for posting them. I found the black swan very interesting as we have lots and lots of them here in Perth on all the waterways in fact the large river that bisects Perth into north and south is called The Swan River named by the pioneers.
I liked that corner shelf and the swing mirror next to it I have just the spot for both of them, more things to dust.
As you say disappointing when things don't sell but pleased you had a nice social time it's always good to catch up with friends. From Shirley

    1. I saw them when I was in NZ too. They look better alive than stuffed! You've reminded me I have a corner cupboard coming back from the Unit - and no-where to put it. I will have to try and sell it straight away.

It was lovely to natter to customers and friends.

  3. Thank you. Enjoyed my trip to the fair. Not sure where one would place the swan and swine either 😂JennyP

    1. Bought for "the look" but they may become old friends to that dealer.

  4. Who would buy those dolls? Some are quite disturbing!

Your stall looks good - shame about the chair after your painting and cushion making.

    1. Not very cuddly are they?!

Thank you, it at least looked colourful. A couple of the stalls (not photographed) were so drab and boring, I wondered why the dealer bothered.

  5. Pleased your fair went reasonably well and you did sell some items. Those dolls were very creepy! I managed to get some YS cyclamen, so dotted them around in various pots this morning and took an old bread knife to a very large spider plant, so now have 4. Even though the lawn was only cut last week it could do with another trim - weather permitting. I've booked my Covid jab, not eligible on age, so Alec has paid for me, as there's supposed to be a really horrible strain coming. Going into Derby on the bus and treating ourselves to lunch out. Hope your eye appt. went well and Tam, Jon and Rosie mending. Xx

  6. The friends make it, I have to say. I have a completely different display to everyone else as I have ceramics, but they do sell. I need to have a sale table next time . . . Someone was saying they tried to book the Builth Fair next year but they weren't taking bookings . . . whether that is yet, or the writing is on the wall, I don't know. If that ceases, I will just give up!

They only mentioned the Flu jab when I booked in. Hope I get the Covid one too as with the state my lungs are in, it would hit me hard if it's a bad one. Eye appt. is in the morning.

Tam shattered, Jon mending, Rosie needs a different cream. A positive though, Jon's car started - it has two keys and one apparently didn't work . . .

  7. Hooray for Jon's car working, one less worry. Maybe he should put a dot of red paint on the key that works. I'm not eligible for Covid as too young, but Alec qualifies being 6 years older than me. You should qualify for the Covid jab as you're an asthmatic, but my friend who is a diabetic (tablet controlled) doesn't. Mad isn't it! Xx

  8. I've had it before. Would rather not in some ways, but also not to keen on being really ill with Covid again. I had it at the same time as Keith, who was given treatment because of his Parkinsons. I wasn't and the moment I had him fed and settled in his chair, I had to sleep until it was time to help him again. I was like that for 6 weeks. You would think anyone with Diabetes should qualify.

  9. Nope, just checked, I'm a year too young (or 6 mths) to qualify on age alone. Having chronic asthma does not cover me, so may have to go private. . .

  10. Jeepers - just seen what Boots are charging. I will just have to wear a mask . . .

  11. I spy some lovely treasures on those stalls that would have had to come home with me. Mind you I can't see the prices so perhaps that's a good thing! I loved your copper with the cyclamen in it & no wonder it went quick! I hope you get your eye sorted.

  12. Is that a real pig??!!!

I am sorry poor Rosie is having such a hard time with eczema. I am sure that Tam must feel desperate to find an effective treatment. I am glad that at least Jon is getting better.

  13. Just had to catch up with the last two posts of yours, I noticed diesel had gone up, petrol is bad enough a few p more down there but diesel as ott at well over 2 quid in places we passed. My wife shops the pice deals at Tesco and tends to stock up and she mentioned corned beef the other day. Ever since Covid we have had our shopping delivered from Morrisons but use Tesco as well, it aint cheap any more that's for sure. Was the fair worth the fuel ? No doubt a lot of you are asking the same question

  14. You have some gorgeous ceramics on display (and I'm not even a potter!)....really, all of the stalls you pictured certainly do a nice job of 'dressing' their tables. We had a charity shop near our old house that did the most gorgeous displays...it was almost like going into a high-end department store..really makes a difference to whether you want to buy or not! That pig, though....I suspect there's a very niche market for those sorts of things....like a farm shop or something lol. Glad you had a good catch-up with friends...I suspect that makes all the difference too. ~melanie xo

  15. I'm really surprised that your little chair didn't fly off the stall, it looks adorable. Maybe try it in your unit with a nice teddy in it, it should sell well at this time of year.
