I am grateful for a few small things which add up to be a big smile at the end of the day. I have something metal to glue back together and thought I would have to fork out £8 or so on some Gorilla glue. I decided to check Keith's workshop, just in case. Found a bottle but there was no movement inside it. Looked to have set solid. However, when I cut the tip of the lid off and put a piece of wire in, there was still some usable glue in the middle.
I did have to go out for a few things for when my friend is staying next week, and went into the Charity shops. I found a Seasalt teeshirt in my size, and also a Seasalt 80% wool stripey top. Perfect for my NZ holiday. Some lovely wools for Tam too, so a real Positive there. Oh and across the road they were selling all their clothes at 50p each and I got a pretty dress which I can use for patchwork (or even Rosie frocks).
I am grateful to see wildlife using and thriving in my garden. It has been slow progress, as the last owners used toxic chemicals to kill weeds and I think these take a while to be washed away. Certainly the last 3 years have shown increasing numbers of insects, reptiles, and birds. I have planted lots of perennials and roses which draw them in too.
The runner and hunter beans are finally pickable (my fault for not watering enough), and cucumbers and tomatoes are doing very well with supplying me with salad. Free food is good - and my little orchard has quite a few apples this year. Not huge because of the dry weather and the youth of the trees, but no complaints.
I had a two-for-one offer whilst still a member of Audible and chose one I had never heard of before - author or title - The Keeper of Stories by Sally Page. Well, I finally started listening to it this week and I am enjoying it SO much and can heartily recommend it. Coming up to the anniversary of Keith's death I had to stop listening to the Diana Gabaldon book I was half way through, as death scenes and the like were too distressing.
I sat down this afternoon and began making a Christmas present for a friend. It's a little wall-hanging for her kitchen (and I will probably make a bigger version too as it's turning out quite petite). Knitted using white cotton garden string, it has a felt Sunflower on the front. I watched several I Escaped to the Country programmes I hadn't seen - most restful.
After the rest I had the energy to make Chocolate Blackberry Brownies (neighbour here to continue upstairs painting tomorrow and he won't say no to a couple of slices!) So that's 8 oz of last year's blackberries used up and a tiny bit more room in the freezer now.
So, a few little things make quite a big positive.
Oooh, nearly forgot! Rosie had her 16mth assessment from the Health Visitor today. She was gobsmacked by Rosie's progress. Tam said her face was a picture :) Rosie has achieved milestones which they don't expect to see until the 27 mth check! She said she was clearly empathic and caring too. She even asked Tam had they thought about which school she might go to later! She said Rosie was an old soul, and she's not the first in the profession to say that. So we are really delighted with her - we knew she was making great progress - as in handing me a book recently and saying "Granma read book" and coming down the stairs standing up - we try and get her to hold our hand, just in case, and she can now run too and open doors, and knows how a key fits in a lock etc, and she's always trying to do up the straps on her car seat. She quickly copies what we do - like in blowing on my hot cup of tea last week. Smarty pants she is! That is a HUGE POSITIVE.
Rosie sounds an absolute delight! They're sponges at that young age, so enjoy every interaction you can. Isn't it wonderful the way they change so quickly. One day something is difficult, the next they're breezing through it. I've stopped buying large containers of glues etc - by the time I need them again, I"m not sure they're useable. So I haven't saved myself money at all, but I do have a drawer full of rock-solid, or separated, dubious products. Years ago I bought a very lare container of woodworking PVA ... it's separated into various shades of yellow. Money wasted. Wellington is wet, cold and blustery today, and we have school drop off and collection. You'll need those Seasalt (my favourite brand) clothes. Bring LAYERS. And a wind and rain proof jacket.
ReplyDeleteThey are indeed sponges. We talk to her about things we see and what we are doing, and describe things which are beyond the "normal" remit for a toddler, but it has paid off. The Gorilla glue was one we had bought before Covid, so not surprising that it had mostly solidified, even though it had never been opened. The PVA sounds yuk when elderly! Layers - thank you - I will pack for that. Have several good jackets. Need some new casual shoes though, to go with stout trainers for outside walking.
DeleteI loved The Keeper of Stories and I am so glad that you do as well. Lots of positives in your life this week.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I am thoroughly enjoying it so very glad I picked it at random. Another positive today (Friday!!)
DeleteDid you know she’s also written a series of nonfiction books about an English flower shop?
DeleteThis reminds me of my dear little granddaughter. It was during covid but restrictions had eased so we were allowed in cafes but in limited numbers with tables much wider apart. I took her in after a swimming lesson as we had no time to get home before another committment. I was a bit anxious about it but I navigated all the space issues and washed hands and the surface of the table. I thought I was on top of it until I said my coffee is to hot to drink I'll have to take it with me. Yup, the little darling leaned over and kindly gave it a good blowing.
ReplyDeleteThey pick things up so quickly don't they? Mind you some of the expressions she has at times, have to reflect her personality - I see her grandfather in her, that's for sure!! Pure cheek . . .
DeleteHow funny. My youngest granddaughter had a tiny little book (it was an accessory for a Barbie doll). Her sister was upset that she had it. My daughter in law gently explained that the three year old was being careful and would give it back when she was done. Fast forward: 3 days later the baby asked me to go to the playroom. In the basement. She is not allowed to go by herself. I went with her, ND she immediately walked over and retrieved that little book. She looked me sweetly. 'Me hided it. Me hide it in my room now.' The little stinker. You do 't dare laugh. I did let mam know ow what was going on.
ReplyDeleteOh that made me smile. They start young :) Hope a book that small wasn't TOO well hided . . .
DeleteIsn't is great when lots of smaller positives make one big one? How wonderful on your granddaughter 's assessment, she is a little poppet. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteYes, it made me happy. Rosie is such a clever little thing but hope she doesn't get too bored when she does get to school. My dad said he was bored at school, never academically challenged. He went to the Grammar school too!
DeleteAre there special “magnet” schools there for “gifted and talented” students?
DeleteShe might have a long-ish bus ride to get to one every day, but it could be worth it; to quote a TV ad from my childhood, “a mind is a terrible thing to waste!”
DeleteThey may end up moving. Who knows what will happen?
DeleteGrammar Schools have been murdered here, which is a terrible shame as it allowed gifted children from poorer households to get a good education.
DeleteWhat a lovely week you've had. Hope the weekend is good too
ReplyDeleteWe shall see. Weather cooler than next week so will get some walking and gardening in before 30 degrees hits us again on Tuesday . . .
DeleteFinding Seasalt clothes in your size is a great bonus! I love their clothes but hesitate to pay full price. You had lots of positives this week. I enjoyed the "Keeper of Stories" too.
ReplyDeleteYes I'm a larger than average size on top too, so it was fortunate. Couldn't afford to buy them new . . .
DeleteComing from an engineering background I’m not keen on glueing metal together, I know it is done but don’t trust it. I have read a lot of Sally Pages books, they are on my Kindle
ReplyDeleteThis is cast iron, so can't be welded. It is a hanging doorbell (trotting horse with bell under) so should be ok. I see I have more Sally Pages' books to look out for. Thanks for the heads up.
DeleteHow lovely to read such a positive post, we all need some nice things and lots of positivity and gratitude these days. So many blogs can be negative and gloomy on a regular basis. Never yours I hasten to add!!
ReplyDeleteWell done Rosie, she sounds like she's doing brilliantly, the clever ones are usually a bit of a handful as they reach the milestones so early, and then can get frustrated when others are far behind them at nursery or school in later years. I hope she continues to flourish.
Thank you - I try to be glass half full. You have summed it up perfectly with Rosie - when she could only crawl she got so frustrated, and she always wants to be one stage on from the one she's at - hence running now! I hope she will do well at school, but I think will be up for challenges.
DeleteHow lovely all this is 😍
ReplyDeleteAlison in Devon x
I think we always need to count our blessings and they ARE there every day, even if they just be small ones. Today (apart from the HMRC payback), it was just the House Martins flying up outside the bathroom window - they are building another nest and I think the one they built end of June (once we'd had rain) has just had some fledglings leave home. They bring me joy.
DeleteGo Rosie, you are a star. Lots of positives and I love that you have lots of wildlife coming in. We' re gradually getting more, lots of insects, bees, hover flies and masses of ladybirds and the birds are coming in ones and twos. But its a very new garden on an estate still being built on and not a lot of cover. Have a fabulous weekend. Xx
ReplyDeleteIsn't she just?! I am sure once you have your garden established you will have a lot of wildlife visiting. Do you have a wee pond yet? That adds a whole new dimension.
DeleteHave a fab weekend yourself.
