As you can see, it rained a bit this afternoon - came down in torrents in fact.
I needed to do a grocery shop today to get some more gut-friendly food in. Lidls' came to £21 which included the meat for the week (King Prawns, Turkey Steaks and Turkey Mince), though the steaks and mince will make meals to go into a 2nd week, mixed nuts, Greek Yoghurt, Mushrooms and veg. Then to T*sco, and as I shouldn't be eating much red meat now, I saw there was an offer on Linda McCartney veggie burgers and sausages, both of which I like, so those have gone in the freezer and will do two weeks too. I also got my Wild Salmon Fillets there and 500g will do several meals too. A nod to Christmas with the tins of chocolates on a special offer so I got Quality Street, either as a gift for friends or for us over Christmas. With cat food, frozen spinach, 500g of blueberries (some to freeze), reduced strawberries etc it came to £42 in Tesco, but that did include half price cat sachets as the box was damaged. Most of it will do me a fortnight.
Above, a swift peek at my new neighbour's veg plot - two long rows of Courgettes which have been doing amazingly all summer. Below, one of the several who Got Away! This one up to my knee in length and an even bigger circumference.
I had to go to the Health Food shop to see what they had, and hooray, some Wholemeal Self Raising Flour which seems to be like gold dust these days. Then across the road to the school charity shop and found a fab pale bluey green polka dot skirt for just £1. It's a soft jersey one - so will travel to NZ like a rag! - and made by Cotswold Collections - retailing at £79 :) Didn't I do well?! As it was suddenly (where did August go?) pension week again I also indulged myself in a cookery magazine. Haven't bought a cookery mag for a year or two and this had some super recipes in.
When I got home though, I felt BUSHED. My heart rate had shot up and I spent the afternoon on the sofa, watching You Tube channels on tv. A Time Team I don't remember seeing (couldn't sleep so watched it laying down, more listening than watching). Then to the Homesteading Family channel, to learn about making a natural antibiotic herbal salve using Bergamot, Yarrow and Comfrey. Then to Azerbaijan to my favourite channels (CLV and Kand Hayati) where my heroine was chopping up MOUNTAINS of home grown vegetables to bottle. Blimey! I finished off with Kate (the Last Homely House) out in her garden. Heart rate and breathing both very steady after that. The Azerbaijan one is SO relaxing.
Peppers.I won't be doing much tomorrow and then Tam and Rosie are here again for a couple of days, and back at the weekend.
I think we had a lot of rain overnight as it woke me several times, where it was being flung at the windows. I had my cat comforters, as always, and they have been and are still on the sofa this afternoon.
Enjoy your day.
We had Iris overnight and she had Sheva on her bed until we went up. Today we went to play mini golf (Granny won) and then hot chocolate with squirty cream and marshmallows. Stopped on the way home to get some caramel doughnuts and popped into the charity shop where she found some cuddly toys for 50p each which actually sell at £10-£20 and a National Geographic book for children for £1. I'm trying to teach her to find a bargain. Hope your health is improving and no more occurrences. Take care. Xx
ReplyDeleteYou have a sweet tooth like me Gill! My guts seem to be partly reset and I haven't had an urge to eat chocolate - was able to walk straight past in T*sco yesterday, and went nowhere near the wine aisle. Those cuddly toys were a great buy, and the book sounds a wonderful learning aid. My geography was very poor beside Keith's (but then he'd travelled the world with the Army) and he was spot on about the Middle East too. I hope Iris will soon have granny's eye for a bargain!
DeleteNow I am back on the blood thinners, I am very aware of what could happen - but praying it never does again.
Some good shopping done. I'll have to look up those youtube channels. I ferment my own cabbage and often add some carrot but it is just in its own juice, produced after a lot of massaging with salt. I love it and could eat it all day long. We rarely eat red meat, in fact I have to remind myself to get some every now and then in case I am missing something nutritionally vital. Tonight we are having chickpea, beet and feta salad with a few herbs thrown in.
ReplyDeleteYou eat more healthily than me. I don't care for beetroot, and only have chickpeas in a stew or curry. I was bought up with an extremely basic diet, badly cooked, and my adventures into different foods have largely been Mediterranean and Indian. I still cook from scratch 90% of the time though.
DeleteGlad you are improving and eating better. I hardly eat any meat, some chicken every now and then very rarely though but that's it.
ReplyDeleteI think I have a gut imbalance too and have to be careful with the bean family. I enjoy my mild chilli using Taco beans, but anything that is ALL beans and my waistline doubles with wind. Since Keith died I have done my usual half a dozen make without thinking meals and not enough variety and no trying anything new - as it's just me here to eat it.
DeleteI’ve been told that the secret to eating beans without feeling like a balloon is to increase consumption gradually — the benevolent organisms in our guts that help us digest the beans need time to multiply!
DeleteWell, I seem to have been ok with the Taco beans so got some more this week, which I may have in a veggie dish as I didn't buy mince. My gut has been out of balance some while . . .
DeleteDoesn't everything look and feel better after all this rain. It came down so heavy last night it woke me up. I find myself watching YouTube for half an hour before I go to bed these days, I just can't face anymore news programmes. Which of the Linda Mc sausages do you like? I used to always get the Rosemary and Red Onion ones but they seem to have changed recently, so I switched to the Lincolnshire ones. I wondered if it was just me or have they changed the recipe.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch news programmes at all - can only get BBC live anyway. Newsfeed is bad enough via Yahoo. I got the ordinary LM sausages - looked at the ingredients (with my specs on) and found they have Soya and Sulphites, both of which I react to. Some for Tam then. I am so wary of what I am eating at the moment now I am back on the "Bleeders"!!! and so had giant Cod fish fingers and Hunter beans tonight.
DeleteThose YouTube videos look very interesting, I agree how watching other folk carrying out their everyday tasks can be very sophorific......that sounds funny......but you know what I mean 😀
ReplyDeleteAlison in Devon x
The Azerbaijan videos are a certain sort of video which contains nature/cute animals/natural noises and no talkover. Tam did tell me what they are called but that was months ago. I find them so therapeutic and watched loads last winter. Rosie loves them to for the animal content.
DeleteI'm glad your heart settled down, Bovey. That sounds mighty scary to me. :-( The view out your window is absolutely beautiful. Yes, groceries are priced out of this world & it's always great when some are on sale. I enjoy The Last Homely House too. Love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteMy heart rate (esp. resting) used to be abnormally low - now it's suddenly shot up to normal again, but normal feels like flat out, if you get my meaning. Even so, the A. Fib needs to be controlled.
