And indeed it did snow . . .

We had about 3" - 4" of snow here.  It was lovely to see it falling - I kept sneaking upstairs to look out of my sewing room window across to Next Door's outside light.  At one point the snowflakes were coming down like 2 bob bits.

I went up to bed at 10, shut the cats down here so I could get an uninterrupted night's sleep for once, and was still awake at 1.30 . . .

Sorry it's not very sharp.  View at the end of our track.

A bit too cold to take my sewing out to the summerhouse today . . .

No cats sitting on the side lawn today!

Last night it looked so mysterious out there, with the trees delineated with snow, and rooves blotted out.  Snow lay deep on the tops of hedgerows and if it had kept on snowing I think we'd have had double the fall we did.  The A470 was closed at the Storey Arms (that's just below Pen-y-Fan) and the A483 was closed near Crossgates by a crash, whilst a slewed lorry (and doubtless lots of snow further on) closed the A44 near Llangurig.

Not much planned for today.  Some more Richard III and Church book reading, x-stitch and History Hits tv.  I am up to date with series 7, part 2 Outlander now . . .  Will Claire survive the bullet - and the operation to remove it?  I've got the toppings from the freezer for my teatime pizza, and a fresh loaf from yesterday.  I'll not starve.  Several people have reported that supermarket shelves were cleared yesterday, ahead of the snow. Bread and milk I don't doubt.

How have the rest of my UK readers fared?

  1. I'm guessing that you have given up on the 'long walk tomorrow' idea then ... with good reason. It's beautiful but deadly. We had about an inch of snow first thing (at 5am ... why oh why do I KEEP waking up at 5am every bloody day), but now it's already turning to sloshy slush and is yucky.

Yes, I was only saying to Alan earlier that everyone will be heading to the shops for bread and milk, it must be a national obsession, see snow and put on the wellies to fetch bread and milk.

  2. For me, the priority would be cat food and apples. Cucumber too. Can't live without it!

No long walks anywhere until this has cleared. It's raining quite steadily now and very wet underfoot.

  3. Hi and a very Happy New Year to you, although it is still raw losing Keith, make wonderful memories in 2025 (Jordan soon). Beautiful pictures and words today, thank you. We popped out yesterday for fresh air and vegetables, gosh the huge Tesco, two local Aldi’s and Lidl looked as if a plague of locusts had swept through them, I would have thought that folks had bought more than enough for the festive celebrations but really - what recession and lack of money!! Makes one wonder. Jan in Castle Gresley

  4. My caravan is under that lot up at Fforest Fields. Boy would I love to be there taking photos in the snow. No pint here it's raining, even our Puppy won't go out in it

  5. Just soggy and wet and miserable here and I am feeling thoroughly fed up (but it’s just a feeling it will pass!). I’ve been receiving photos of beautiful beaches in Thailand from my son which is making me want to hop on a plane and go somewhere warm and dry tomorrow. Never mind, it’s roast chicken dinner for us tonight and I have a feeling our Dry January could come to a shuddering halt. I had a chat with Ben the shepherd yesterday afternoon while he was checking the sheep and I was on a walk and he told me about three accidents that he knew about on black ice on ungriited lanes around here. It’s madness that because the National Speed Limit applies to these country lanes that car drivers think it’s ok to drive at that speed. Stay warm and well and safe BB. I’ve been on the landing yesterday and today spinning two bobbins or 100g of undyed Romney merino. Next job is plying - not my favourite thing to do. My evening viewing is Bleak House which is just brilliant, I think I’m on now episode eight of 15. I’m going to watch Little Dorrit next. S has been watching football all afternoon so he’s happy. Right cup of tea time now and I fancy a piece of toast and marmite and then I need to make some notes on Orbiltal for book group tomorrow. It’s my choice so I’m leading the discussion and I have a feeling it’s going to be a bit of a marmite book. I loved it, beautiful space pastoral prose coupled with all the detail about life on the ISS made for me at least an absorbing read. Sarah x

  6. it's just cold and wet here, no snow. I have decided to turn the heating on and be darned with it! I cannot be cold, not with Parkinson's. At least Tesco got here today so my fridge and freezer are full.

  7. I think we had a similar night's attempt at sleep. My brain was on over-drive, Thimble-kitten kept the big cats in a chaos of leaping off and back onto the bed; hissings, crashings, me wondering if my face would be run over by catapulting cats! Snowing since before daylight, such as that is.

  8. Just boring rain here which washed away the few flakes that fell overnight!

  9. We had a few inches here in the hills above Wrexham but we have had far deeper in the past. Tis a bugger for me as my work grinds to a halt in this weather though today was a planned day off so no harm done there, tomorrow though it looks as if it will be a bloody cold day spent in the Orc's Workshop...oh well

  10. We had a couple of inches in this part of Yorkshire, but it was drizzling by the time I got up and has carried on spitting on and off all day, so not much left on the ground now. Relatives on higher ground had a lot more lying snow this morning and lost their electric.

  11. It's so beautiful, fairy tale scenes. Here far far away it's sunny and the wind lessened to 13 mph [hah, maybe 25 mph right here], and the windchill is 11*F. Properly dressed Mo and I had a wonderful walk, all those fresh ions and cold air oxygen.

  12. Now that is a great deal of snow for your part of the world. Enjoy while it lasts.

    God bless.

  13. Just thought I'd let you all know that it is 38C here in Perth Australia today and the weekend before Christmas we had two days of 41C so we were stuck inside hibernating with the wonderful air con on. Not sure which situation I'd rather be in yours or mine. I came to Australia 55 years ago from UK as a 1969 version of a backpacker and fell in LOVE we've been married 53 years I've never regretted coming here except for the heat. Snuggle up and keep warm or cutch up as my mother would say she was Welsh I think in Welsh its spelt cwtch. Happy New Year to you all. Shirley.

  14. I understand milk and bread - but in New Zealand during the Covid emergency lockdown people bought 6 months worth of toilet paper!! Why ??? In the end, you use about the same amount, so stockpiling it is crazy. It turned into a national joke!

  15. Just flooding to contend with on my way to Montacute House yesterday- MH side of Crewkerne was astonishing , right across the road in several places but the rain eased and I was able to get home easier than I got there. I’ll never forget having to take my old Bosslady to Sainbury in Sherborne during a harsh winter, people argueing over bread and milk, in Sherborne of sll places! I was shocked. Why people don’t have sense to keep long life milk in a cupboard or bread in a freezer I do not know. Last place I’d head to in inclement weather is a shop, we’ve all we need here because I keep it that way!
My sister drove her eldest back to uni in Aberystwyth yesterday! Sent amazing photos, how they did 12 hours of driving I don’t know - they did stop quite a bit as had headaches from the snow glare and also driving in fog.
Today here it’s bright and breezy and I might chance some laundry on the line. Fingers crossed lol! You are so patient with your cats. I’d be shutting them out or downstairs as I need my sleep, I’m frightful without it. Malory stays in now as too old to be out but he sleeps ,
When young he was out all night and in asleep all day. Charlie flits around on his nerves or is asleep on Ms bed in the day but unless wild/freezing he gets put out at night. Thankfully the dogs are peaceful! Danette x

  16. We have a foot of snow on the ground. It is another gray day, and it will be cold and gray for the week. I really don't mind gray...monochrome has it's own beauty, I think...but I do mind cold. I always find plenty to do inside on days like this, and it sounds as if you are the same.

  17. Plenty of rain here at the coast and some hail but no snow, just some up on the hill tops.
