Crushingly hot

I can't do hot.  It was up around 30 deg. here yesterday - no good for man nor beast.  I made a pizza topping early, and a base for it, but in the end a lighter snacky lunch was eaten as no-one had much of an appetite.  Danny and "I" were late getting here as they has shut the A483 - but not put up any obvious diversion signs and Danny ended up coming across the Mynydd Bwlch-y-Groes and onto the Epynts, before getting spat out onto the same road that the cars competing in the Nicky Grist rally were using.  They were setting off outside the Strand in Builth.

A bit of excitement for the town, in the count-down to the Royal Welsh show.  The showground is starting to sprout tents and marquees and the Fountain Inn has set up it's hospitality bar marquee at the rear and mammoth deliveries of beer will be being delivered in the next week or so. Next week the gleaming tractors and farm machinery will start setting up on the showground. The show is HUGE - thousands of Young Farmers alone, and exhibitors and stalls selling anything from a sandwich to a tractor.  Our town's population is 2,500.  During show week, this swells to 250,000!!!  An adult ticket is £34, and £10 for a child.  I shan't be going and doubt I will even go into the town as I wouldn't get parked and the logistics of trying to get to the shops with the queues of cars gridlocked at busiest times (despite out-of-town parking) isn't worth it.  I will go to Brecon for the grocery shopping that week.

I moved all the tomatoes and the two cucumber plants which had been on the left side of the greenhouse over onto the right, where I have the shade-cover so I am hoping they will benefit from not being in full sun all day.  A couple of the tomatoes were suffering from shrivelled leaves, despite being watered twice a day.  Tomatoes nearly over now but cucumbers have LOTS of flowers and 8 cucumbers growing nicely.  I've tied them up to the roof.  They seem to love the heat.

Umbellifers enjoying the shade of the top paddock/orchard.  It's very overgrown up there now so I will have to borrow the strimmer back from Tam and sort it out once it's cooled down a bit.

It was lovely having Danny and "I" here - gosh, she has shot up and is really tall (6 in December).  She loved making a fuss of the cats.  Sadly, the situation with E and me is no better.  She still expects me to apologize - my outburst of terrible grief over the phone was seen as anger and screaming and not raw gut-wrenching pain.  It seems this impasse will continue forever.

I sat out in the garden with a glass of wine and my newspaper once it had cooled a bit.  I'm getting my money's worth out of that little patio set.

Right, one final photo, of the pizza - I had some for tea and cut the rest up and froze it.

We have some rain forecast and Wednesday will be COOL! Thank heavens.

  1. A blistering 28C in my living room at three a.m.! It was a long night. Oh, the Royal Welsh Show, has to be the premier show of it's kind in the whole of the UK, doesn't it? It is rather splendid. Welsh Cob day is a sight to behold. I hope the weather is kind to them as it can be rather hot or sometimes rather wet!

  2. Oh gosh, that is too hot for a comfortable night. Gabby is sleeping with ice packs - I presume she puts them inside a plastic bag - but she said they help. It might cause you to get too chilled if placed on the body, but close by, to touch with your hand now and then, perhaps they would help?

Welsh Cob day is a spectacle, although a local farmer who specializes in breeding Welsh ponies, reckons that these days it seems to be the one who can rear the highest, wins!

  3. I've had a similar situation with a family member - and I completely empathise........hope this doesn't sound awful and it's fine if you decide it's not suitable to publish, but I think it's unfeeling and a bit disrespectful to demand an apology from someone who is going through the grieving process. When it happened to me I couldn't help thinking........" It will be your turn one day "

    2. gz and Alison - I totally agree with you. But if I want my son back, and when they have children together, I want to meet them . . . It will still be on my terms, whatever I write . . .

  4. I need to word it carefully as she sees the world differently from me. That's all I can say without being disrespectful to her.

  5. I hate conflict so I'd apologize so convincingly that I'd earn a spot in the Actors Guild Hall of Fame!! *haha* That pizza looks wonderful, Bovey. We have an inch of rain forecast for Thursday but that's a long way off. By the time Thursday gets here, the forecast will probably have change completely. Love, Andrea xoxo

    1. As I don't have a tactful bone in my entire body, not even a tactful EYELASH!, my early attempt at trying to explain my mental and emotional state horrified Tam, who I shared it with. I am an Aries so meet problems head on and speak my feelings. Praying for rain here too - meant to be having some the next 3 days. Hooray! I shall go out and garden in it.

Freezing the pizza is a good idea, giving a quick meal when needed

    1. I've got 5 portions in there now, and made for very little outlay.

  7. Excellent idea to freeze pizza portions, a nice quick tea. I sympathise with your dil situation. We have much the same, but they severed all contact with our family, haven't spoken/seen for 15 years. She told my dear Dad to f*** off and me too, reduced my daughter to tears (very hard to do). I still love my son, but don't like him much. Hopefully yours will be resolved nicely. Enjoy your gardening. I've just watered again - whilst I can. Take care. Xx

    1. Oh Gill how dreadful. I cannot imagine that sort of situation with such total lack of respect for the family she married into. My son is struggling with the situation, needless to say. Cloudy here now and rain forecast. Thank heavens.

  8. I'm so happy you got to see I! And pizza looks delish. Not for hot for pizza! Here they deliver to the beach even on hottest days.

Ice packs wrapped in a hand towel can go under one's pillows, quite nice.

    1. Well, it was quite a substantial pizza - as you can see, not a skinny Italian type one! Ah, ice pack wrapped in a hand towel. I shall know that for the next 30 deg. night.
