Clearing the log jam

Not the best photo (joggled it!) but you can see from this just how MASSIVE the crane is that they are using to lift the log pile out from around the bridge.

One of the bigger trees being winched out.

Plenty more where that came from . . .

This big old tree, jammed sideways on across the main bridge stanchion did not help matters, and after that arrived, everything piled up against it.

They are very skilled at this - chap was lowered down to attach the chains around the various trees, so that they could be lifted out after the bod with the chainsaw then sawed through them.

Just a few of the trees recovered.

  1. what a complicated job and what huge trees, thank you for sharing that, as it's a sight we'll never see in Suffolk!

    1. I hope you don't Sue - it's a regular occurrence here, but the worst always happens when they open the floodgates at Llyn Brianne Reservoir to stop it foundering under the weight of water . . .

  2. Plenty of wood for somebody's log burner this winter once it has dried out.

    1. Yup - we could only take the smaller branches and would you believe it, just about all the rest has disappeared already.

    1. It was hard to credit just how many huge trees came out! They knew their stuff, that's for sure.

    1. We were only able to pick up some smaller logs - even the branches we could have managed got taken by other folk and the whacky baccy pair took the rest. There's being neighbourly for you as they knew we were trying to get some wood for the winter as Keith hasn't been able to drop a tree from our copse because of his frozen shoulder. I hope Karma comes and bites them hard on the bum . . .

  5. Wow! Fascinating. Wish they were as quick off the mark everywhere.

    1. We chanced coming home the bridge way today, as we knew the A40 was shut so they could clear trees from the bridge at Pontargothi and knew they were nearly done here yesterday and they obviously weren't going to be hiring two giant cranes to do the work.
