A few Good Books to read

This is my current reading, courtesy of my friend Gay, and I am enjoying it.  More to come by him Gay tells me!  I have a big pile of books to get through but gosh, never enough hours in the day!

My blogging friend Sharon is responsible for this purchase! (She recommended this series).  Period detective story set in 1929.

Recently read: the Ann Cleeves is one I treated myself to recently and can recommend. "The darkest nights can hide the deadliest secrets . . . Driving home during a swirling blizzard, Vera Stanhope's only thought is to get there quickly.  But with the snow driving down heavily, she becomes disorientated and loses her way, eventually stumbling on another car abandoned on the road.  With the driver's door open, Vera assumes the driver has sought shelter but is shocked to find a young toddler strapped in the back seat."  Murder most foul of course!

The other two are from my friend Gay and were both really good reading (couldn't put Castles in the Air down.  It deals with doing up an historic castle - Gwydir Castle in North Wales, and all the couple's trials and tribulations, including the resident ghost!)  Forging on is the story of an apprentice Farrier in Yorkshire, and made me LOL in places.  A nice relaxing read.

Some more reading fodder from my friend Gay, who has the same taste in books as me.  The Anna-Marie Morgan books are detective novels set in Wales.  The Edward Marston one of a Medieval series.

Finally, freebies - I just couldn't resist, but will read and pass on, apart from the Hovel in the Hills - I shall keep that copy (with photos) to replace my original elderly one.  Someone in town is clearing his late mother's bungalow and had a sign up outside his garage door asking people to take what was on offer to safe it from Landfill.  We also had an old Lloyd Loom chair from there, to go in the Summerhouse, but it needs a new cushion.

  1. You are in for a treat as you have all of the Maisie Dobbs series to look forward to, whereas I've read them all and am on the waiting list for the newest

  2. I love that - when you really enjoy a new author and there are LOTS more books they have written! Still waiting for the new Phil Rickman novel, but he had a stroke over 2 years ago and it is a slow recovery for him to get back to writing regularly again.

  3. Like Sue said, I am pretty sure you'll enjoy the Maisie Dobbs series. I've read them all as I was lucky enough to have already read the latest one, but now I'll have to wait awhile for JW to write the next one. Of course, I've a huge pile of other books so not without a read (or 20...). Never without a book.

    1. I'm the same - never without a book. Backs of sauce bottles suffice if truly desperate! I'm glad I'm not the only one with a huge stack of books to tackle.

  4. Lovely selection of books with a few familiar authors :) Hope you enoy Maisie Dobbs as much as me - I've just read the latest on my kindle and it was good to be back in her world. I must try that Vera Stanhope one as I don't think I have read it and I have another Frances Brody waiting to be read on my kindle. I was that anxious for the latest Phil Rickman novel that I pre-ordered it and chased Amazon last October - not realising it wasn't being released until 2021!! I did feel silly.

    1. Morning RR - I'm sure Maisie Dobbs will hit the spot. It's good to be back in a book where characters and locale are as familiar as friends. Will look out for Frances Brody. I'm sure you're not the only one to have pre-ordered the latest Phil Rickman novel. It's a long wait but the poor man had a stroke, so no surprise it is taking a long time to finish. I pre-ordered the latest Barbara Erskine novel, The Dream Weavers, which arrives today (Hurray!)

    1. Made up for by doing lots of craft work - it will balance out. After I had mowed the lawn yesterday I sat on the rocking bench with my book. It was lovely.

  7. Success Gardener. Glad to meet you and pleased you enjoy my blog. I hope you enjoy the new-to-you authors when you try them. If you can get hold of any Phil Rickman novels, you will thank me! They are set along the Welsh borders, so in places I know quite well, and theyare a can't-put-down read.
