Not my car (thank heavens, with the Antiques Fair this weekend), but my son Danny's. He has had nothing but trouble with it from the moment he bought it - meant to have been regularly serviced, but turns out it had never been touched! He ended up spending hundreds and hundreds on replacement engine parts - especially on the new Turbo it needed. Anyway, he phoned me up yesterday to tell me it had caught fire - he'd taken a pile of E's business towels to the laundry and left them in the back of the car. (They get oily because of the oil she uses in her massage therapies). He didn't take them out straight away as he was so busy, and said that after such a hot day, he opened the car door and whoosh, the towels burst into flames and then everything was on fire and the interior melted with the ferocity of it. He had to get the Fire Brigade out and now of course, is in negotiations with the Insurance company. Meanwhile, he HAS to have a car so I have offered to loan him a chunk to buy a servicable replacement (there you go, last day of April and money STILL in freefall from my accounts). I told him, at least he wasn't driving along when that happened, and nobody's hurt.
Another very hot (23 deg C = 73 deg F) day here. I need to water round in a moment, as stuff in pots will need it. I have a new helper courtesy of my new neighbour, and got Sam to move the two sacks of FYM for me today, round to the beanpatch in the bottom triangle.
I've sat outside a couple of times at my new table and chairs, reading and having lunch, and later just some water and an apple, wearing a big straw hat to keep the sun from burning my neck. I did some food shopping first thing as I won't get a chance over the weekend and the girls will tell me my fridge is empty! I had to get vegan butter and yoghurt for the Vegan Lemon Drizzle cake I'm making next week, and was low on cat food too.
I have worked hard on the wallpapering, which seems to take forever to do, and as I had to empty a lot of fabric from one of my wooden chests in order to move it, I went through and have made a big pile to sell at the Fair. Not quite the Swedish Death clearance on fabrics, but a start has been made!
That's well scary, towels igniting inside a hot car. It's been hot here. I can only sit out in it for about 15 minutes, then I shelter indoors. Crazy really, too cold, too wet, and now too hot to go for a walk.
ReplyDeleteIn the low 70s here (73 or so) which is too hot for me. The garden/yard is a sun trap too as it faces South. When it is this hot - too hot to walk - I usually get up extra early and walk before breakfast, whilst it is still cool.
ReplyDeleteKeith always said, when using Danish Oil and the like, never leave the rag you used with it inside the house, as that could self-combust. It is clearly the same with massage oil too, even after washing.
I can see that to rescue the quilt blocks would have meant picking out all the seams and laying out again. I probably would do it, just to hide my chagrin! but--cushion covers are always needed.
ReplyDeleteLike Keith, we've always been careful to dispose of oily rags--tung oil, linseed--any of the like. who would have thought massage oils could self combust?
Painful as the situation is, sounds like Danny is well shut of the problem car--just not the preferred way of 'trading.'
73 F. is considered a pleasant, mildly warm day here--we've been in low 80's F most of the week.
Well, rather than make more I decided to use what I had! Not enough of the fabrics I used as borders, but Don't Care!
ReplyDeleteDanny said himself, he is well rid of that car (his first). Hopefully he will be a bit more savvy about the next - I said to make sure he had sight of it being regularly serviced with paper trail.
73 - mildly warm? I swoon in that heat, unlike Keith, for whom it could never be Too Hot! Low 80s and I would be stood beside the fridge with the door open!!!
Hi! Yes 73* is mildly warm, aka cool weather here. Not hot til mid to high 80's. My ex refused to allow air-conditioning unless temps were over 90*. Still cool here, I wore layers, a cashmere turtleneck and a fleece to go out.
ReplyDeleteThose curtains are beautiful!
Reading this, and towels whooshing into flames is so scary. How is one supposed to store/ trash/ wash? Safely?
Lovely save w the cushions. Mo is very poorly again, so I can't write more, always enjoy your posts. Lemon drizzle--yum!

How scary to have your car catch on fire. I am so glad that no one was hurt. Hope the insurance comes through.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Thank God no one was hurt, but my goodness, how on earth did that happen? We all leave things in our vehicles for hours on end. I wouldn't mention the towels being a business wash load to the insurance company!!!
ReplyDeleteLove those colours in the blocks.
Awful news about the car - so relieved Danny wasn't in it. I hope the insurance can be sorted out soon. I remember my daughter's first car was bought privately second hand and she had to spend over £1000 getting work done it at the first mot. She nows buys a brand new car and changes it every 3 years!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad Danny wasn't in the car, I hope the insurance company pay out for him and that he can get a much more reliable one next time.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! You know, we used a wood finish for our kitchen counter tops. When we got it from Tim's cousin who owns a hardwood mall, he warned us that the rags we used to apply it must not be left inside because they could spontaneously burst into flames. They lost a panel truck in just that way. We were very careful. Honest to pete, though. Massage oil???? How shocking! Your quilt block turned out very nicely. The muted colors are very soothing.
