The occupants of the Roman fort at Llandeilo would have been able to see the fires of the folk at Garn Goch, and I don't doubt that the occupants of Garn Goch would have known about the Romans being there too. The tribe here would have been the Silurians. From Carmarthen onwards there were the Demetae.
Looking back towards the town of Llandeilo, about 5 miles away.
River Towy looping across the scenery.
If you look at the plan in the first couple of photos, you will see the enormous amount of stones which were shifted and built into a tall defensive wall. This wall enclosed the entire site.
These photos were taken seconds apart but the sky looks happy and sunny in the top one and quite oppressive in the bottom one. Strange!
One last lingering look at the fabulous views all round. We had a very enjoyable walk which was what I call "touching base" where I can get away from the distractions of every-day life.
We saw a couple of lovely little pieces of slate with short messages on, and feathers whilst we were walking round. On our way back we began talking to a lovely lady and said how going back into a house this afternoon would be difficult after the freedom of spirit we had just felt up on the fort. It turns out she was making these little messages, and she was delighted we had noticed them and gave us one, which we can keep or place somewhere else quiet on a walk. So I think we will do the latter.
Beautiful views.
ReplyDeleteI like the slate messages better than a strange angry bible verse I once found someone had left on the bench by the footpath here.
The Iron Age was so defensive, perched on top of hills with the great ditches, vallums and walls. Wales is as always beautiful Jennie.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the lovely views. Happy you were able to get in such a nice walk.
ReplyDeleteLovely views and such an interesting history of life so many years ago.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
What a wonderful place to walk. Steeped in history.
