Unsuitable for Vehicles

I have been intending to explore this walk ever since we first saw it on the map.  I left it too late to do it in its entirety (about 5 miles), so drove to the end of it and parked up and just had a short, but fairly demanding walk today.

As you can see, the heading was correct.  Mind you, there were tyre-tracks - in some places a tractor, in others probably a quad bike. It was quite a steep climb for the first half of the walk, but then without climbing, you don't get nice views.

And it kept on climbing.  My legs and lungs needed the exercise though.

Views in all directions.

Light levels were low as it was gone 4 p.m. when I started my walk.  I needed a break after doing all the sashing on a small quilt for a friend.

I can't find out anything about this fire-torn building.  It just shows as a small square on the map, and no report of a fire if I Google one in Builth area. No obvious fireplace or staircase - just a single story building that someone must have lived in.

Above and below: another interesting tree trunk, this one being an oak.

Welsh for Public Footpath.  This cuts across the fields towards Hillview estate.  I turned around shortly after this.

Sun on the distant hills.

A bank of Periwinkles included:

A little lonely Violet.  It was good to get out and put all the horrors of what is unfolding in the Ukraine in a box in the back of my head.  Those poor families.

  1. I am away at the moment and have been all over these last two months - but the hills of wales are still some of the best in the world, even on grey March day. How lovely.

    1. It's good to have walks on your doorstep. Enjoy your away time especially that sunshine, though we are promised our very own mini-heatwave this weekend.

  2. I love finding pathways like that - I always think of the history that will be held in those old tracks. Wonder too what happened to the burnt house?

    1. An ancient trackway methinks. Tam reckoned that the building had been one belonging to the Water Authority as there was a nearby water facility with dire warnings should you nick the pipework as it was TRACABLE! I think that had been built, the other building abandoned/used as a den by local kids, and the nset alight.

  3. Interesting derelict building there Jennie, may have had other uses in the past. The burning could be vandalism. Exploring new walks sounds interesting.

    1. Pretty sure that the burning was vandalism (there is also a group in town who specialise in smashing shop windows of a weekend.)

  4. A cracking good walk..worth doing.
So sad to see the burnt out building. Looks like a small home more than barn.

    1. I am looking forward to doing the complete walk but am waiting for some spring sunshine and leaves.

Tam thinks it was to do with the water authority and showed me several similar examples.

    1. It was indeed. It shows me I can walk the correspondingly steep hill up to the church (the hill I normally choose to walk DOWN!!)

  6. Well I just came back from Fforest Fields and had a great few days there, Sunday was not up to much but yesterday and today were really nice, with a nice frosty morning we took the dog out for a walk in. Traffic on the way home is not so heavy at the moment either but then we all know why that is. The building looks like an old barn

    1. Glad you had a lovely time at Fforest Fields Billy. This weekend looks like being really nice so I am plotting a little local jaunt.

  7. A lovely walk and stunning views. I've been seeing periwinkles in flower everywhere. It is always good to try a new walk.

    1. We are about to have some more of our own stunning views RR, as the next door neighbour in front/to one side of us is going to drop all the view-blocking trees!

  8. Well worth braving the path for. I love old abandoned buildings like that fire-damaged one, I always imagine myself making them habitable again.
