Garden Centre fun

Well, I've seen it all now - a RODENT Christmas Tree! It made me smile, I have to say!  Who on earth thought up that RATS would be something you dressed your Christmas tree with?

This was a little Christmas scenario - a cross between Holland (Windmills) and Switzerland - cable cars and snow!  Nothing like as good as the splendid one they have in Charlies in Carmarthen though.

I always love the look of these Christmas dried fruit and frosted pine cones but am too mean to pay £10.99 for some (or MORE).  I have a dehydrator so could make my own, but first I would have to find the dehydrator!  Sorry, photo below not a brilliant one.

Thousands of different decorations.

Lots of different coloured themes.  There was even one stand bedecked with pigs, cows, sheep, tractors and other farming themed decorations! (See above).

Hedgehogs too . . .

All sorts of different trees and ideas to decorate them.  We of course stay with the traditional tree from the wild woods.

Needless to say with all the flashing lights, and different colours, Rosie was on sensory overload for a bit!

How cute is this little chap?

I will do some outside photos and what I bought later.  There were some trees there with staggering prices - one enormous olive tree in a planter had been reduced - from £999 down to £899.  Bound to fly out now!  A 6 foot or so Acer in a pot - £349!  Huge planters big enough to hide a body in, £349.  I bought just two lots of bulbs as they are expensive there and so I bought things I wouldn't necessarily find elsewhere.

I have been having no end of techy problems. The printer (an HP, drat it) has suddenly refused to let me use the cheaper alternative to its own printer ink (which would cost me £40 + instead of the £12 I've been paying.  I had just bought some replacement ones and it doesn't want to know and won't even print black any more.  Now, do I buy another cheap printer complete with ink (probably a Canon) or do I give in and buy expensive ink for a printer which is otherwise working but calls for the dear stuff?  I can get the Canon with own ink for the same price as the HP ink . . .  Canon come with not very good write-ups reference about setting up on the computer.

I was up in the middle of the night, trying to get yesterday's photos off my phone.  It decided it wanted to load up everything on there again and then I was out of storage space and the only way to put more photos on and access fresh emails was to bite the bullet and pay Microsoft £1.99 a month for extra storage.  THEN I couldn't find the photos.  I could see them on a Pictures page but couldn't find the link for it.  Finally this morning I have accessed them on a fresh Photos link which I used for my blog.  I still don't know where they are otherwise and of course my chief technician has gone home now!

So with the printer (also a scanner) playing up I couldn't scan documents to send to the Bank to have Keith's current account balance transferred to mine, and will have to go down to the PO in a minute to post them, recorded delivery.

I gave up on the lovely but challenging Medieval banquet 1000 piece jigsaw.  Life is too short and I hadn't touched it for a fortnight.  Instead I sat down yesterday and found the edge pieces for the 500 piece Summer Cottage.

I have been offered a space next weekend (single table) at the Antiques Fair Keith and I used to do.  I have a little overspill area where I can put some small pieces of furniture but need to get myself organized over what I am taking, and give a little Georgian child's chair a good polish today.  I want to sort out what is going and have it all in a couple of boxes.  It unfortunately clashes with what would have been Keith's 84th Birthday, and the children are all going to be here for that and cook venison.  I nearly said no I can't do it but I heard Keith's voice telling me not to be so silly.

  1. Yes, celebrate Keith's birthday by doing what you did together.

The sad thing about all these decorations is that they are mostly plastic

  2. It is a shame but then my mum had glass ones and none survived. I bought one wooden, one feather and one knitted . . .

Glad you agree about celebrating Keith's birthday in doing what we liked best.

  3. You must celebrate Keith's birthday by doing what feels right for you and if that's doing the antiques fair and letting the children cook for you then that's what it will be. Enjoy it and celebrate Keith.

I do love a Christmas shop but draw the line on a rat tree. Do you think someone got a message to say "decorate a tree in STARs but made a typographical error so that it said "decorate a tree in RATS"

Keith would like to be remembered by both the meal and my doing our old Fair, where we had such happy times.

  4. Keith is right: Life is too short to miss an opportunity to celebrate with your children. I love those trees. What beautiful ornaments.

    1. I dare say there will be tears on the day, but our family are very supportive.

I have to say the Garden Centre has the most amazing selection of Christmas decorations I've seen.

  6. HP printers are well known for downloading new firmware updates which prevent compatibles being used. If you contact the compatible cartridge manufacturer, they usually come up with a workaround in a few days after each firmware release. Otherwise, they will usually refund your money as the cartridges don't work. Good luck!

    1. Thanks for that Kate. We reckoned there had been an update. We've opened the black that was with the set I bought, but no joy - and too late to send back. I will contact them and see if they can help out. Thank you.

  7. I gave up with my printer as I didn’t use it enough and found that the ink had dried up when I wanted to use it. I now book a computer at my local library and print off documents there. Much cheaper! Many libraries now offer this service.
And the rat tree - whatever next?!

  8. I loved seeing your garden center Christmas ideas! Ratty tree is adorable, tho yes, odd. Is he a storybook character, I wonder?

My HP scanner/ printer refuses the cheap inks too--but not always. Try removing, clean openings [messy ink!]and reinsert firmly. Sometimes it take 3 tries. Right now it's okay for copies but will not print color photo images. It was a very expensive gifted model, my cheap Canon from Target was better, less of a diva.
Lovely how your children pitch in and celebrate their dad. You and Keith raised them very well, be so proud. Will be keeping you in my thoughts. Have a good market.

  9. A family gathering will be something to look forward to as you pack up after the antiques fair. It is good to spend time with family. I can't resist looking at all the decorations in Charlie's in town and seeing which ones I might go for when they get reduced to 70% off. Yesterday I gave in and bought a large folded paper star with an led inside to hang in the big sitting room window. My excuse is that our son and his wife will be coming to stay for a few days before Christmas. Last year I bought some of the smallest ceramic decorations in the sale but I fear my small driftwood tree will have reached its limit. I'm now looking for some suitable branches on which to hang the other beautiful decorations I seem to have acquired. I also had to resist giving the life sized plush talking reindeer in Charlie's a pat as I went past.

  10. Glad you decided to do the show. You can always chat to Keith in your head particularly about the customers-just don't do it out loud. I think I told you are one and only garden centre has only just caught on to the possibilities of Christmas retail and still has a long way to go. I really, really must time a visit for when the UK centres are going full on Christmas. I have used the same decorations for years and years. This year I would like a complete redo with owls being at the top of the list. Now I've seen your picture of the hedgehogs I think I might add them to the scene. I will have to find out if owls hunt hedgehogs though, don't want the hedgehogs to be in fear for their lives all Christmas.

  11. I think doing the fair sounds like an excellent way to celebrate Keith's birthday, especially with someone else having a hot dinner waiting for you when you get back!
