Grounded!

Well, I shall not be gracing Hereford Hospital with my presence today, as after a ghastly night (awake 3 hours AGAIN) and trotting to the loo every 1 1/2 - 2 hours, I have woken up with a kidney infection an believe me, I am driving nowhere further than Boots the Chemists today. I feel like I've been kicked by a mule.  Plus, it has just started snowing steadily here, so Tam may be staying put too . . .

Yesterday morning I thought it was an oversight to tell me to wait without any antibiotics for the 2 - 3 days it would take the sample to "brew".  Turns out I was right, and now I am wasting a hospital appointment that could have been used by someone else.

Don't worry, I have good neighbours and a the moment the snow isn't laying on the yard so local roads should be ok for a while yet.

Finally - gone 5 p.m. - I have a short course of antibiotics.  Two to be taken at once, with a meal, so just heating up some mince I cooked earlier.  Nothing exciting as I wasn't feeling up to much.  I have been waiting ALL day for the script, having gone down to the surgery at 9 a.m. this morning after no-one picking up the phone.  A bit of snow, and everyone suddenly decides they need to see a GP.  We won't be going anywhere tomorrow (Tam and Rosie here now) as the roads are wet and will soon be an ice slick.  Good not to be on my own here.  What would I do without my family?

P.S. It really doesn't take much snow to upset the applecart here as only the main roads are gritted, and snow is a fairly rare occurrence (even rarer this early when it's not officially winter yet).  The side roads will freeze to slick ice overnight and then it's a 4x4 job to get anywhere.  We've had perhaps an inch or two of snow, pretty to look at, but more on its way apparently.

    1. I've had the heating on all day today. Plus I had the electric throw over me earlier and had two Upright Snoozes - didn't want to lie down and sleep deeply as I was waiting for the Surgery to phone me.

    1. I've got a 3 day course which targets kidney and "tubes" infections. Hope they work. Should get a different lot? when the test results come back.

    Take care - stay warm

    1. Nice and warm here, and Tam and Rosie braved the mountains and are here now. Roads have been wet so no snow on them here, but Tam had to wait until the gritters had been through on the A44. We won't be going far tomorrow as the roads will be ice slicks in the morning.

    1. So no snow in your neck of the woods then? I hope Nick is soon home - I saw that Nottingham had had quite a downfall. I managed to rally enough to cover my roses in planters with several inches of compost as a mulch to protect the roots.

  5. That sounds very painful. I would stay put with lots of warm drinks and a hot water bottle and let a kindly neighbour do the running around. Hope someone will be able to fill your hospital appointment today. It’s been worryingly mild in the south recently and we haven’t needed to have the heating on - only lighting the woodburner in the afternoons to warm the sitting room before it gets dark. That’s all set to change from tomorrow though and with minus three forecast think I will be bringing my orange tree indoors this afternoon and threading through its branches a copper wire string of tiny lights to bring a glow to a corner of the garden room. Last night I got S up to bath and bed by 9pm and then I settled down on the rug in front of the fire with my knitting and peace and quiet. I had an Epsom salts with a few drops of geranium oil bath and continued reading Whale Fall in bed and slept until 7am. Always grateful to have a good night’s sleep. Hoping you overcome this painful infection quickly, it sounds horrid. I have knitted many fair isle tam o’shanters and finger mitts for presents and commissions but this is my first piece of fair isle knitting that will need steeking. I’m just over halfway up the body now and repeating the first chart so it won’t be long before I get to the armholes. Right now the pattern instructions for the armhole steeks make little sense (a combination of putting stitches on hold, casting on steek stitches, knitting the steek chart all the while decreasing for armhole shaping, following a colourwork chart and doing it twice for left and right - eek!) but I have to trust the designer Ella Gordon and do exactly as she writes and it will work I am sure. Sometimes it is good to allow an expert to lead you step by step through a difficult job and I know I will feel a sense of achievement when finished. Take care BB and please try and rest as much as you can so you can get better and hope Tam has a safe journey to you - perhaps she can pick up your new prescription to save you going out or asking a neighbour? 1. Well, it cheered me up no end when Tam and Rosie got here safely, and she got my prescription for me (not ready until gone 4.30 at the surgery). We've had it very mild - even had Primroses flowering and fresh buds forming on several shrubs. Bet they had a shock today.

How I envy you a good night's sleep. This infection has had me up and down like a fiddler's elbow and reaching for painkillers last night. Your skill with knitting is WAY beyond mine! As for steeking - I'd never heard of it until yesterday, when Kate at the Last Homely House was talking about her daughter doing it and she was going to give it a try . . . I can tell you exactly what would happen if I did that - especially with my absent brain right now! I have rested all day today (no option) and hope this will soon be under control again. Tam did her guardian angel bit and got my script for me.

  6. I was going to say some of what Sarah said, lots of drinks and hot water bottles and stay safely indoors. I hope a neighbour can pick up a prescription for you. Take care. xx

    1. I tried a hotty botty earlier on but it was a bit TOO hot and I felt sick. My horsey neighbour's husband came round and bought me a bucket of apples (will have to get busy with those . . .) and some short Asters which I'll plant on the bank when the white stuff has gone and I feel better. He would happily have gone for my prescription but I had to wait all day for it. I think the receptionist was fed up with me by 4.30!

  9. What a pain - literally for you. I really sympathise with you and hope they sort the right antibiotics out asap. I had an untreated UTI which led to kidney problems for most of my teenage years, spending time in hospital. They told me I had a grumbling appendix! Hopefully your neighbour can fetch you in what you need and the snow doesn't cause too many problems. It was really thick here but seems to be melting rapidly. Miss Sheva was not impressed. Hugs Xx

    1. Yes, kidneys a tad uncomfortable but hey, the bladder feels better (all the blardy germs have migrated!) I can't believe that the medical profession is so lax when it comes to UTI's - Tam said they are still testing (poorly) as they did in the 1950s. Give antibiotics first - then test a sample. Where's the sense in that?!

It's snowed all day here but not covering the roads (as wet) but clear skies out now so it will be the Cresta Run into town tomorrow. We will be Staying Put!

  12. Stay safe and I hope you feel better soon, it's no fun having to commute to work by bike or on foot in this!

  13. I had a kidney infection when I was pregnant with our first child. I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy. I hope the new antibiotics work quickly.

    God bless.
