Lizzy (Gone to the Beach) suggested removing the horrid polyester wadding and I am with her on that. However, the lady who made this has machine quilted it to the central block, so that square will have to stay, along with that area of the ancient flannel sheeting she used. It will be covered over anyway. This is a king size bed so this must be nearly double in size. I intend to add blocks to the top and bottom and a narrow border to the sides. I will take it along to my quilting group next week and see what The Boss has to say about it!
Sorry, the light from the big window doesn't show the colours clearly at all.
I popped round to see my friend Pam earlier, for a natter, and then had my level walk along the old railway line. Several cyclists using this (it is a cycle path) today. One chap on his own and then 3 others, who were consulting their map and going on to Llanwrthwl (and possibly the Elan valley after as it's on the way). I told them about the church there with the big standing stone by the entrance and they said they would check it out.
Pam and I are going to a talk given by the Heritage Society tonight, about the history of a local house (Pencerrig) - talented local artist Thomas Jones lived there.
Tam messaged me earlier on and she and Rosie are coming for the weekend. I will make us a chicken curry and find something to tempt Rosie with . . . She likes everything that is bad for her - salami and pepperoni and ham and sausage rolls . . . I have a home made cheese and onion pasty in the freezer she may eat.
I enjoyed "Agatha" on Prime last night - it is very close to the book with her in I'm reading at the moment! She meets up with Leonard and Katherine Woolley (he was THE archaeologist back in the 20s and 30s) at the dig at Ur in Mesopotamia. Dastardly doings and of course she meets the love of her life, Max Mallowan, in the book and in the drama. A nice evening's viewing.
Listened to a Podcast In Our Time yesterday, about The Battle of Crecy. Then The Rest is History, and The Klu Klux Klan.

Good full view pics! It is lovely. I can see why you want to rescue it. Don't make it so large it's huge, heavy and unusable. Maybe just a narrow 3, 4" border to frame it? I'll be interested to know what the quilting group expert advises.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you re feeling better.
lizzy
To fit a single bed it needs to be a bit longer, but not wider. It would fit a bed now for Rosie, as it is, but not long term.
ReplyDeleteLower back/SI much easier today.
I m posting a link that might make a lovely border. It's from a small US shop but you could maybe find it only in UK [[etsy?] just an idea.. Hope the link works. https://twothimbles.com/collections/all-fabric/products/copy-of-amelias-blues-ivory-multi It's Amelia's Blues, by Betsey Chutchian I think.
ReplyDeleteYes, on Etsy, but with $24 postage, it will have to stay there. Really good choice though Lizzy.
DeleteLove the soft colours of the quilt and the pattern. Glad you’re feeling better. JennyP
ReplyDeleteWell, I was fine until I bent my back this morning in the bathroom. Since then icing (20 mins) and heating (20 mins) have bought a little relief. Only walking really helps.
DeleteI became suspicious when none of my followed bloggers appeared to have posted since early in the week, and having checked here first I've decided its another blogger glitch.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't take much to have our backs 'go out', does it! I think I've 'done myself a bit of mischief' by finishing a queen size quilt this week. I don't have a 'design wall' so the blocks are laid out on the guest room bed which is king size and then carried row by row to the sewing machine in the other room. Pressing, cutting and attaching borders--I finished at nearly midnight on Wednesday.
Your Trip Around the World is an interesting piece--rather nice color choices, but sounds like the maker tried to machine quilt and made a mess!
I once bought fabric to finish a project, got it home and discovered although it was the same print it was evidently a different dye lot. Dilemmas!
Blogger is a pita! This is an old repeating problem which results in one leg (right) shortening from the hip being out of alignment. Sitting is the worst thing for it.
DeleteWell done with your queen size quilt. No way could I work until midnight - can't stay awake much past 9.30 these days! Lightweight!! Yes, I am thinking me and the stitch ripper may have to get to work on the machine quilting, although it is quite tidy from the top so perhaps just trimming the batting and aged sheet back will do. I shall leave as is and see what Alex says next Wednesday.
Ah, fabric can catch us out even when we think we have got it sorted!
Agatha Christy week here, her birthday is Monday do there is coming on in the village and Wallingford, you can have tea with miss marple today. My blog lists are not updating for some reason
ReplyDeleteGosh, synchronicity again. I managed to get one of her novels from the Library - either they don't have many in stock or they are always out on loan, I have only found a couple in the past few months.
DeleteNo, Blogger not bothering to update. We will have to carry on regardless.
You said that the centre block is already quilted, by looking at a close up it looks like it is stitched in the ditch so would it be possible to cut as close to the stitching with a small pair of scissors so all you are left with is a very very narrow piece of the poly wadding and flannel sheet. I can quite understand why you wouldn't want to unpick the quilting stitches if they are very small ( I hate reverse sewing, like most sewers) ha ha.
ReplyDeleteI do all my own quilting on my domestic machine and when doing straight line quilting I lengthen my stitch to about 4 so if I have to unpick it's a lot easier to see and get the un picker under.
The quilt top is rather nice and well worth the effort to save it and pretty colours for a little girl. Good luck. Glad your back is improving. From Shirley
Shirley - that's a good idea. I will have a look at it later and see what I can manage. The stitches ARE close together so it would take forever with a stitch ripper.
ReplyDeleteI don't usually like blues and yellows together, but somehow this just works, it's lovely.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's subtle. I've not used yellow in quilts at all.
