Patchwork first - fabrics for the Heritage William Morris Quilt

Just a short post this evening to show you the quilt I am going to make for our bed/  I won't be starting it much before the autumn (at my patchwork class) but my darling daughters decided to take me fabric shopping at Calico Kate's wonderful shop in Lampeter, and of course it had to be fabric for THIS quilt!

This photo (sorry about the glare from the flash) gives you an idea of the overall design, with a close-up below.  The range of William Morris fabrics (Kelmscott) doesn't seem to be generally available to buy yet, so I chose William Morris fabrics I liked and will look for some more to add to (or instead of) patterns already chosen.

Above and below - the fabrics my daughters bought me.  We had such fun choosing them, and laying them out on a table to see what was going with what.  There are a couple of prints I chose just because I liked them (my girls were saying, go on mum get that one or this one!) and will be used in other projects.  The red fabric in the photo above is one of those.

  1. Hi BB, I have that magazine too and I was only admiring the pattern the other evening. Will look fantastic. How lovely of the girls to treat you. You have not perchance had a birthday have you ... just a feeling. In which case many happy returns. This will be a lovely winter project for you and keep you out of mischief or get you into it one way or another. I have done a little more needlepoint since the photo posted this morning. Its very fine canvas so a bit tedious on the eyes but I am hoping it will look good when it is finished. I have been grabbing a few minutes here and then before going to sleep as I am determined to try and get some of the UFOs/new to me items out of the way with. Catch you soon and I do so like your choice of quilt. Fantastic. Take care Tricia xx

  2. I've taken out a subscription to the magazine (they were offering such a good rate) and I have always loved the William Morris designs. These fat quarters WERE a birthday present and a great idea (thanks Gabby, you chose perfectly. She and Tam both thought it a good idea and they were right). My actual birthday isn't until next week though, but Tam couldn't come and stay then so we celebrated early.

Do you have a craft light/magnifier? I wouldn't be without mine - I need good light to sew by these days - either the hand-quilting or x-stitch, although I don't do much of the latter these days. I am glad that you are enjoying your needlepoint so much - it is a lovely design. I look forward to seeing the finished piece.

  3. What a perfect birthday present for you BB. Beautiful designs and colours from WM! You will have so many hours of pleasure making your quilt. A huge project but it will look so good when it is eventually on your bed.

    1. I shan't be rushing it DW, as I want it to be a proper Heirloom (no wobbly bits!) It will certainly give me hours or pleasure, both making it and enjoying it on our bed.

  4. I was a quilter for many years until my hand got too shaky and I can assure you that it is fatal to go anywhere near a quilting fabric shop unless your purse is bulging.

    1. Hah - eldest daughter found that out. She came out with 4 fat quarters which she couldn't resist, and I have found her some extra bits from my stash so "when" she had some spare time, she will do some cushion covers too.

What a shame you can't quilt now, but I am sure the urge is still Strong!

  5. What a beautiful quilt. The William Morris material is fabulous. Like books I love material.
I have finally stopped buying material .I have lots of Japanese material that I adore but do not know what I will be using it for.
Like Weaver it is hard for me to use. even with a sewing machine.
I have been just looking at the material over and over, beautiful. Your daughters are so sweet.

    cheers, parsnip

    1. Hi parsnip. Isn't it gorgeous? The new line of his fabrics, "Kelmscott" has sold out it would seem so I will have to wait to add Lily Leaf, Marigold and some red Strawberry Thief to my stash.

I hope someone will make up a quilt for you with your lovely Japanese material. I have just had a lovely parcel of Japanese silks and other pieces from Elaine, over at Tales from Parsonage Cottage, so I am spoilt rotten this week!

My daughters are angels and knew exactly the right thing for my birthday treat!!

  7. What a lovely present of beautiful fabrics and the quilt design is fabulous too. Have you been to Kelmscott? It has always been tantalisingly closed whenever I have been near by. One of my special memories aged about five years old is helping my mum choose WM Golden Lily fabric to be made into curtains for her bedroom. When the time came to empty their house it nearly broke my heart to take them down from my mum’s sewing room and put them into textile recycling, but they had done sterling service for almost 50 years!

  8. Intriguing quilt! I think the main block is a Sawtooth Star variation--I can't isolate the filler blocks. I rather miss seeing the newest Moda lines, but, for sure, I have enough fabric to 'see me out!' [Probably rather more than that!]

  9. The best kind of shopping! Lovely fabrics. That's going to be a very fine quilt indeed.
I tend to spend more than I intended when I go shopping with my girl, she knows my weaknesses too well, eggs me on to greater indulgence. I love it.
